Phys. Rev. B 112, 214424 (2025) - Published 11 December, 2025

Disordered glassy states have been observed in a wide range of 2D systems, such as colloidal nanoparticle or fluxon lattices, exhibiting a characteristic nonlinear response to external stimuli. The authors report here on the observation of a glassy 2D lattice of nontopological magnetic bubbles in the noncentrosymmetric ferrimagnetic alloy Mn1.4PtSn. The quenched structural disorder, introduced by driving the system through various magnetic phase transitions, is characterized by a high density of lattice defects and a highly inhomogeneous motion of the bubbles in external magnetic fields.

Emergence of a boundary-sensitive phase in hyperbolic Ising models

Xingzhi Wang, Zohar Nussinov, and Gerardo Ortiz

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214102 (2025) - Published 1 December, 2025

The introduction of spatial curvature leads to novel phases lying beyond the conventional Landau and topological order paradigms. In Ising models on hyperbolic lattices, the authors identify a boundary-sensitive bulk ordered phase that emerges between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regimes as the temperature increases. Using a symmetry-restricted corner transfer matrix renormalization group approach, they map here the complete phase diagram with transitions linked by a boundary-transforming Kramers–Wannier duality. Cayley tree limit calculations expose a sharp holographic correspondence between boundary and bulk correlation functions.

Revisiting the mechanisms of thermal transport in vacancy-defective silicon

Xueyan Zhu, Jin Yang, Junichiro Shiomi, and Cheng Shao

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214313 (2025) - Published 15 December, 2025

Conventional understanding on thermal conduction mechanisms in defective crystals is based on the phonon gas picture, treating defects as scattering centers that reduce phonon lifetimes without altering frequencies and group velocities. However, this theory overlooks fundamental consequences of defects: they break crystal symmetry and disrupt the definition of unit cells, which may fundamentally alter the nature of heat transport. The authors go beyond the phonon gas picture here, and establish a computational framework combining the Wigner transport equation with normal-mode decomposition. They reveal that the emergence of wavelike effects and defect-induced modifications to velocity operators in vacancy-defective silicon are critical previously underappreciated mechanisms.

Chiral electronic excitations and strong electron-phonon coupling to Weyl fermions in the kagome semimetal Co3Sn2S2

Near a Weyl point, spin-momentum locking forces opposite spin orientations above and below the node. When a Weyl point lies near the Fermi surface, electrons can scatter across it only by flipping spin, thereby breaking time-reversal symmetry. This process appears exclusively in the antisymmetric A2g Raman channel. The authors observe here enhanced A2g intensity below the ferromagnetic transition of Co3Sn2S2, providing strong evidence for Weyl points. Furthermore, the calculated resonant A2g response shows qualitative agreement with experiment.

Spin and pair density waves in two-dimensional altermagnetic metals

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214410 (2025) - Published 4 December, 2025

What happens in a correlated altermagnet at low temperatures? Due to the exchange origin of the unconventional spin splitting, the altermagnetic state can set in at relatively high temperatures. Motivated by recent experiments, the authors use here renormalization group and ab initio calculations to demonstrate how altermagnets can act as a parent state for secondary many-body instabilities, including spin-density waves and unconventional superconductivity driven by electronic correlations.

Quantum criticality and emergent order in the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Kitaev chain

Zhiling Wei, Zhengzhong Du, Xiaodong Cao, Wen-Long You, and Yi Lu

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214434 (2025) - Published 15 December, 2025

Higher-spin materials can host exotic quantum phases with no counterparts in familiar spin-½ systems. Using density matrix renormalization group calculations, the authors chart here the phase diagram of a spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic-Kitaev chain and reveal two Kitaev-driven phases. A Kitaev nematic phase emerges from a delicate biquadratic-dimer background through an Ising quantum critical point, which further evolves into a Kitaev dimer phase that spontaneously breaks screw symmetry and crystallizes into a gapped order of alternating ℤ2 bond parities.

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214435 (2025) - Published 16 December, 2025

The authors report here the most comprehensive study to date of the coupling between magnetism and the crystal lattice in CoPS3, a magnetic van der Waals material with high spin-orbit coupling and unquenched orbital moments. Employing a suite of experimental techniques, they uncover unambiguous signatures of spin-lattice coupling: magnetostriction and magnon-phonon hybridization. These findings illuminate the intricate interplay between the spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom in this quasi-two-dimensional system.

The authors investigate here superconducting UTe2 across a broad set of chiral and nonchiral order parameters and identify a clear experimental discriminator. A robust QPI peak, observed only in the superconducting state, emerges as the key fingerprint. Its dispersion and stability uniquely single out a B3u pairing, which among the nonchiral pairing channels also appears to be the only one that exhibits a peak at zero energy in the DOS, consistent with the experimental observations.

Formation of Andreev molecules at long distance using an embedding circuit

Erik S. Samuelsen and Yuli V. Nazarov

Phys. Rev. B 112, 214523 (2025) - Published 31 December, 2025

The authors propose here a novel way to realize Andreev molecules from hybridization of excited singlet bound states in different Josephson junctions connected to a shared electromagnetic environment. They uncover relevant parameter regimes where molecular states arise by numerically obtaining the low-frequency mutual inductance as an important signature. This work also demonstrates the experimental feasibility by explicitly showing how a resonant oscillator mode can be exploited to enhance hybridization and for readout of the molecular states.

Phys.
