Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb β−Li2IrO3

Alejandro Ruiz, Nicholas P. Breznay, Mengqun Li, Ioannis Rousochatzakis, Anthony Allen, Isaac Zinda, Vikram Nagarajan, Gilbert Lopez, Zahirul Islam, Mary H. Upton, Jungho Kim, Ayman H. Said, Xian-Rong Huang, Thomas Gog, Diego Casa, Robert J. Birgeneau, Jake D. Koralek, James G. Analytis, Natalia B. Perkins, and Alex Frano

Phys. Rev. B 103, 184404 (2021) - Published 4 May, 2021

The spin-orbit entangled nature of the magnetic moments in Kitaev materials is expected to give rise to a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state with fractional excitations. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering under a magnetic field, here the authors map the excitation spectra of β-Li2IrO3. They observe a dichotomy between a magnon-like response at low energies, originating from intertwined field-induced ground states, and a multi-spinon-like continuum at higher energies, originating from pairwise excitations of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate QSL.

Defect-driven ferrimagnetism and hidden magnetization in MnBi2Te4

You Lai, Liqin Ke, Jiaqiang Yan, Ross D. McDonald, and Robert J. McQueeney

Phys. Rev. B 103, 184429 (2021) - Published 28 May, 2021

MnBi2Te4 and MnSb2Te4 are the first examples of antiferromagnetic topological insulators. However, the presence of magnetic defects in the form of antisite mixing between Mn and Bi or Sb introduces defect-driven ferrimagnetism. The application of a large magnetic field of ~50 Tesla aligns the magnetic defects with the main Mn layer, allowing for estimates of the defect concentration and the strength of the antiferromagnetic coupling (J′) between Mn defects and the main layer, which is by far the largest magnetic coupling in the system.

Fingerprinting triangular-lattice antiferromagnet by excitation gaps

K. E. Avers, P. A. Maksimov, P. F. S. Rosa, S. M. Thomas, J. D. Thompson, W. P. Halperin, R. Movshovich, and A. L. Chernyshev

Phys. Rev. B 103, L180406 (2021) - Published 21 May, 2021

Rare-earth triangular-lattice materials naturally combine the effects of geometric frustration and strong spin-orbit coupling, providing an ideal platform for the search of novel phases. Here, the authors report a combination of insights from the low-temperature specific heat data and theoretical modeling that provide a near-precise identification of the CeCd3As3 magnetic ground state and a remarkable level of certainty regarding the part of the phase diagram where it belongs, paving the way to a deeper understanding of a broad class of materials.

Phys.
