Quantum criticality in the nonunitary dynamics of (2+1)-dimensional free fermions

Qicheng Tang, Xiao Chen, and W. Zhu

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174303 (2021) - Published 12 May, 2021

Quantum criticality, which exhibits universal features such as nontrivial collective fluctuations, is one of the central topics in statistical and condensed matter physics. Here, the authors design a class of nonunitary random dynamics of free fermions that robustly produces novel critical steady states. The emergent quantum criticality is numerically confirmed for the 2+1 dimensional case, and the proposed analytical interpretation can be easily extended to any dimensions. Their discoveries are potentially helpful to understand quantum critical phenomenon in nonequilibrium dynamics.

Self-organized error correction in random unitary circuits with measurement

Ruihua Fan, Sagar Vijay, Ashvin Vishwanath, and Yi-Zhuang You

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174309 (2021) - Published 27 May, 2021

Quantum systems evolving under unitary dynamics with a low rate of projective measurements can realize a highly entangled steady state. However, the stability of this phase against the disentangling action of measurements has not been fully understood. Here, the authors quantify the ability of this highly entangled phase to hide local quantum information, thereby relating its stability to its behavior as an emergent quantum error-correcting code. The authors estimate the tolerable measurement rate, above which this quantum code becomes unstable.

Current-induced dynamics of skyrmion tubes in synthetic antiferromagnetic multilayers

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174408 (2021) - Published 7 May, 2021

The topological spin textures in three-dimensional nanostructures may show complex dynamic behavior that cannot be found in any two-dimensional nanostructures. Here, the authors study computationally the current-induced motion of a skyrmion tube in three-dimensional synthetic antiferromagnetic bilayer and multilayer nanostructures. They show that the dynamics of the synthetic antiferromagnetic skyrmion tube depend on several factors, such as thickness of ferromagnetic layers, number of interfaces, and strength of driving forces.

Field-induced intermediate ordered phase and anisotropic interlayer interactions in α−RuCl3

C. Balz, L. Janssen, P. Lampen-Kelley, A. Banerjee, Y. H. Liu, J.-Q. Yan, D. G. Mandrus, M. Vojta, and S. E. Nagler

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174417 (2021) - Published 13 May, 2021

α-RuCl3 exhibits an intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. The latter state may be related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Several measurements including neutron diffraction show that the intermediate state is magnetically ordered with a periodicity perpendicular to the plane doubled compared to the order at zero field. This can be explained by accounting for spin-anisotropic interplane interactions, showing that a three-dimensional model is necessary to capture the physics of α-RuCl3.

Magnetic properties of the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe3 under pressure studied by La139 NMR

K. Rana, H. Kotegawa, R. R. Ullah, E. Gati, S. L. Bud'ko, P. C. Canfield, H. Tou, V. Taufour, and Y. Furukawa

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174426 (2021) - Published 21 May, 2021

LaCrGe3 is a unique itinerant ferromagnet that exhibits an avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) under pressure. This occurs due to a change in the order of the phase transition as well as through a new high-pressure magnetic state, which is suggested either to be antiferromagnetic or short-range ferromagnetic. The NMR data taken here under pressure are consistent with the recently proposed short-range ferromagnetic order. Furthermore, the authors have discovered the persistent presence of three-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations even at pressures close to the putative QCP.

Conductance quantization in topological Josephson trijunctions

Julia S. Meyer and Manuel Houzet

Phys. Rev. B 103, 174504 (2021) - Published 6 May, 2021

Here, the authors predict that topological Josephson trijunctions generically display a nonzero quantized transconductance. This result originates from a combination of two different aspects of topology: topological superconductivity in the leads, thus hosting Majorana end modes, and a synthetic topological band structure in the multiterminal Josephson junction. Many groups are currently studying multiterminal junctions using various superconducting hybrid platforms. An experimental check of this prediction would constitute an important milestone on the roadmap toward demonstrating Majorana braiding in trijunctions.
