Inelastic neutron scattering determination of the spin Hamiltonian for BaCdVO(PO4)2

V. K. Bhartiya, S. Hayashida, K. Yu. Povarov, Z. Yan, Y. Qiu, S. Raymond, and A. Zheludev

Phys. Rev. B 103, 144402 (2021) - Published 1 April, 2021

No material perfectly realizes the frustrated quantum ferro-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a square lattice, but BaCdVO(PO4)2 comes close. Here, the authors perform neutron spectroscopy measurements in high magnetic fields to determine an appropriate spin Hamiltonian for this system. They overcome numerous technical difficulties, such as the required 114Cd enrichment for neutron experiments and the complex sample mosaic. The results will help understand the previously discovered presaturation phase in this compound. Could it be the elusive spin nematic state?

Unveiling the phase diagram of a bond-alternating spin-12 K−Γ chain

Qiang Luo, Jize Zhao, Xiaoqun Wang, and Hae-Young Kee

Phys. Rev. B 103, 144423 (2021) - Published 15 April, 2021

The quantum spin chain with bond-directional interactions can host fascinating phenomena. Here, the authors study such a spin chain, built of a Kitaev interaction and an off-diagonal exchange (dubbed the Γ term). This model possesses a self-dual relation and a mirror symmetry, and is found to exhibit a multicritical point, two topological phase transitions of distinct universality classes, three magnetically ordered states, and four disordered phases including the preeminent Haldane phase. These findings demonstrate a fertile playground to study quantum magnetism and topological phase transitions.

Induced order and collective excitations in three-singlet quantum magnets

Peter Thalmeier

Phys. Rev. B 103, 144435 (2021) - Published 29 April, 2021

For even f-electron compounds (e.g., Pr, U) the ground state may be a nonmagnetic singlet, nevertheless magnetic order appears. The moments are induced simultaneously with the ordering. This excitonic quantum magnetism is investigated by the author within a general three-singlet model. The precursor soft magnetic excitons, the transition temperature, and the induced saturation moment are derived. Furthermore, the phase diagram with possible first- and second-order transitions and critical behavior of magnetic exciton dispersions across the transition are obtained.

Probing the superconducting gap structure in the noncentrosymmetric topological superconductor ZrRuAs

Debarchan Das, D. T. Adroja, M. R. Lees, R. W. Taylor, Z. S. Bishnoi, V. K. Anand, A. Bhattacharyya, Z. Guguchia, C. Baines, H. Luetkens, G. B. G. Stenning, Lei Duan, Xiancheng Wang, and Changqing Jin

Phys. Rev. B 103, 144516 (2021) - Published 20 April, 2021

The ternary transition metal pnictide ZrRuAs has been suggested to be a rare example of a superconducting topological crystalline insulator, with evidence for topological states along with bulk superconductivity below Tc = 7.9 K. Here, the authors have probed the superconducting gap structure of this compound using muon-spin rotation and relaxation spectroscopy. Their results reveal a nodeless isotropic s-wave gap structure and confirm that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of noncentrosymmetric ZrRuAs.

Magnetoelastic coupling and effects of uniaxial strain in α−RuCl3 from first principles

David A. S. Kaib, Sananda Biswas, Kira Riedl, Stephen M. Winter, and Roser Valentí

Phys. Rev. B 103, L140402 (2021) - Published 8 April, 2021

In Kitaev materials the spin-orbital entangled nature of the magnetic moments suggests an intricate magnetoelastic coupling. For the case of α-RuCl3, the authors investigate this effect via first-principles methods. Exact diagonalization studies on the calculated magnetoelastic model reproduce and explain recent magnetostriction and Grüneisen parameter measurements, validating the magnetoelastic parameters. Their structure predicts that compressive uniaxial strain between the honeycomb planes will strongly strengthen the Kitaev exchange and suppress the antiferromagnetic order.

Elucidation of the strong effect of an interfacial monolayer on magnetoresistance in giant magnetoresistive devices with current perpendicular to the plane

Björn Büker, JinWon Jung, Taisuke Sasaki, Yuya Sakuraba, Yoshio Miura, Tomoya Nakatani, Andreas Hütten, and Kazuhiro Hono

Phys. Rev. B 103, L140405 (2021) - Published 12 April, 2021

Electronic band matching at the heterointerface between magnetic and nonmagnetic metals influences spin-dependent transport through that interface. However, the impact of atomic-level interfacial structure on the electronic band matching and the resultant transport properties have not been clarified. Here, the authors have fabricated high-quality epitaxial giant magnetoresistance devices with half-metallic Heusler electrodes with interfacial ultrathin Ni insertion layers. Through state-of-the-art microstructure analysis, they demonstrate that even a monolayer of Ni strongly affects interfacial band matching and giant magnetoresistance.

Proper and improper chiral magnetic interactions

Phys. Rev. B 103, L140408 (2021) - Published 23 April, 2021

There is currently a strong need to understand noncollinear magnetic phases where generalized chiral magnetic interactions can play a prominent role. Here, the authors give a clear and accessible discussion of improper chiral magnetic interactions and how they can arise from proper isotropic or chiral interactions. For example, the energy landscape of noncollinear magnets with chiral degeneracy can be mistakenly interpreted in terms of large improper Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that in fact originate from isotropic biquadratic interactions.

Phys.
