Direct evidence of ferromagnetism in MnSb2Te4

Wenbo Ge, Paul M. Sass, Jiaqiang Yan, Seng Huat Lee, Zhiqiang Mao, and Weida Wu

Phys. Rev. B 103, 134403 (2021) - Published 2 April, 2021

The compound MnSb2Te4 is a close relative of the intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. Density functional theory predicts that a Weyl semimetal phase exists in ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4. Here, the authors fill in gaps in the magnetic imaging of MnSb2Te4 and confirm long-range ferromagnetic order in single crystals of ferromagnetic MnSb2Te4 using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy. The direct evidence of ferromagnetism in MnSb2Te4 paves the way for realizing the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal phase in the family of Mn(Bi, Sb)2Te4.

Magnetic order of Dy3+ and Fe3+ moments in antiferromagnetic DyFeO3 probed by spin Hall magnetoresistance and spin Seebeck effect

G. R. Hoogeboom, T. Kuschel, G. E. W. Bauer, M. V. Mostovoy, A. V. Kimel, and B. J. van Wees

Phys. Rev. B 103, 134406 (2021) - Published 5 April, 2021

Here, the authors report temperature-dependent spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) of Pt on the complex antiferromagnet DyFeO3. The symmetry of the SMR as a function of in-plane magnetic field angle shows a 3D rotation of the Fe3+ Néel vector G, while the paramagnetic Dy3+ affects its magnitude. The SMR monitors the phase transition of Fe3+ spins at and below the Morin temperature of 50 K. Below 23 K, additional features emerge that persist below 4 K, the ordering temperature of the Dy3+ magnetic sublattice.

Gapless state of interacting Majorana fermions in a strain-induced Landau level

Adhip Agarwala, Subhro Bhattacharjee, Johannes Knolle, and Roderich Moessner

Phys. Rev. B 103, 134427 (2021) - Published 19 April, 2021

The authors demonstrate here a theoretical realization of a Kitaev “non-Fermi” spin liquid, where interacting Majorana fermions collectively realize a gapless state that resembles fractional quantum Hall physics at half filling. They show how the action of strain in a Kitaev material can potentially generate such a phase, in which pair hopping of fermions, constrained by symmetries, dominates the ground-state physics and the excitations. This study lies at the crossroad of diverse fields, such as quantum Hall physics, frustrated magnets, flat-band physics, and interacting Majorana fermions.

Theory of the electric field controlled antiferromagnetic spin Hall oscillator and detector

Phys. Rev. B 103, 134431 (2021) - Published 22 April, 2021

Neutron scattering study of magnetic anisotropy in the tetragonal antiferromagnet Bi2CuO4

Bo Yuan, Nicholas P. Butch, Guangyong Xu, Barry Winn, J. P. Clancy, and Young-June Kim

Phys. Rev. B 103, 134436 (2021) - Published 26 April, 2021

Using neutron spectroscopy, the authors map out the full magnon dispersion in the easy-plane antiferromagnet Bi2CuO4 and determine its complete spin Hamiltonian. In particular, they solve a long-standing puzzle in this material by determining its small anisotropic spin interactions. Equipped with the complete set of interaction parameters, the authors establish Bi2CuO4 as a rare example of quantum order by disorder, where quantum fluctuations break the in-plane spin degeneracy and are manifested as a spin-flop transition observed by neutron scattering.
