Resource limitations induce phase transitions in biological information processing

Takehiro Tottori and Tetsuya J. Kobayashi

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L042012 (2025) - Published 14 October, 2025

An optimal estimation and control framework is proposed that explicitly accounts for biological resource limitations. Application of this framework to biological information processing shows that resource limitations can induce discontinuous and nonmonotonic phase transitions between memoryless and memory-based strategies.

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L042013 (2025) - Published 10 October, 2025

A cold ytterbium atomic beam with a sub-recoil transverse momentum width is generated via momentum filtering through a metastable state. The resulting beam is used to realize Bragg diffraction and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L042011 (2025) - Published 9 October, 2025

Derived quantum geometric bounds on optical observables are paradoxically applicable to materials with trivial bands, such as elemental bismuth, in which winding arises from projected spin eigenvalues. These novel quantum metrological bounds, moreover, can characterize spin-topological quantum sensors and are robust against disorder effects.
