Phys. Rev. Research 7, L042019 (2025) - Published 20 October, 2025

Atomic levels that are strongly coupled by intense XUV light are shown to be significantly affected by the instantaneous electric field. When the excited state is populated, it is polarized on the attosecond timescale, which in the time domain expresses itself as giant counter-rotating oscillations.
