Many strongly interacting systems of experimental relevance are nearly integrable. A paradigm for studying such weakly nonintegrable systems has been lacking. Here, the authors extend a generalized hydrodynamics framework, which has been successfully used to study transport in integrable systems, in order to tackle the dynamics away from integrability. In doing so, the authors propose a simple ansatz in the form of a relaxation-time approximation for the collision integral, finding excellent agreement with first-principle numerical simulations.

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model is thought to provide a promising approach to strongly correlated fermions. However, it is a zero-dimensional system, and generalizations to higher dimensions often come with undesirable properties. Here, the authors propose elegant solutions to this conundrum in one and two dimensions, dubbed “Dirac fast scramblers.” The latter also turn out to be an advantageous large-N limit of the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory, which captures anomalous dimensions that are usually only accessible as 1/N corrections.
