The authors systematically reveal that magnetic textures can be controlled via topology, using discrete objects. A discrete formulation of the topological winding number is used to define the stray field from individual nanomagnets, which in turns controls the magnetic texture in a disk. The authors demonstrate experimentally that appropriate topological conditions can stabilize an energetically unfavorable structure, such as an antivortex in a permalloy disk. The topological argument holds even in coupled systems, leading, for example, to applications in neuromorphic computing.
