Orbital Hall effect as an alternative to valley Hall effect in gapped graphene

Sayantika Bhowal and Giovanni Vignale

Phys. Rev. B 103, 195309 (2021) - Published 12 May, 2021

The authors show that the valley Hall effect in gapped graphene can be understood as a manifestation of the orbital Hall effect, in which electrons in states of opposite orbital magnetic moment flow in opposite directions, generating an orbital magnetization current. Replacing the ambiguous valley indices by a physical quantity – the orbital magnetic moment – this reformulation provides a convincing explanation of optical rotation measurements in gapped graphene.

SU(4) spin waves in the ν=±1 quantum Hall ferromagnet in graphene

Jonathan Atteia and Mark Oliver Goerbig

Phys. Rev. B 103, 195413 (2021) - Published 12 May, 2021

The lowest energy excitations of a quantum Hall ferromagnet are generalized SU(4) spin waves that can be real spin, valley pseudospin waves, or mixed spin-valley waves (see image). In this paper, the dispersion relations of these different SU(4) spin-wave types are investigated based on the phase diagram of the quantum Hall ferromagnet at filling factor ν=±1. In three of the four phases, there can be one or more linearly dispersing modes at low energy, due to a remaining symmetry in the residual anisotropies.
