The Higgs amplitude mode is a collective mode that appears in various macroscopically coherent systems, ranging from superconductors and charge density waves to superfluids. In all observations reported thus far, the amplitude mode was activated by an external perturbation. Here, the authors report the observation of this mode purely driven by intrinsic quantum fluctuations. By carefully monitoring the emission from an exciton-polariton condensate, they succeed in capturing the signal of this quantum depletion by detecting the ‘ghost branch’ spectrum of this mode.

α-RuCl3 exhibits an intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. The latter state may be related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Several measurements including neutron diffraction show that the intermediate state is magnetically ordered with a periodicity perpendicular to the plane doubled compared to the order at zero field. This can be explained by accounting for spin-anisotropic interplane interactions, showing that a three-dimensional model is necessary to capture the physics of α-RuCl3.
