Charge transport capacity as a probe of resonances in models of many-body localization

Jessica K. Jiang, Federica M. Surace, and Olexei I. Motrunich

Many-body localization (MBL) breaks the standard paradigm of quantum thermalization and has evaded a complete understanding due to mysterious finite-size effects in numerics. Here, by introducing and calculating the charge transport capacity in MBL systems, the authors connect these finite-sized effects to increasingly probable larger many-body resonances with increasing system sizes, occurring even at very strong disorder. A perturbative model explains the physics of these resonances and reconciles these resonances with the possibility of asymptotically stable MBL.

Qubit sensing is rapidly emerging as a powerful way to probe quantum systems. Here, the authors demonstrate how measuring correlations between two qubits, both coupled to the same quantum many-body system, can uncover crucial information about the system itself. These correlations reveal how excitations and fluctuations propagate through space and time, distinguish ballistic from diffusive transport, and provide a sensitive probe of how far the system is driven from equilibrium.
