Dipole-quadrupole coupling in triplet exciton-polaron quenching in a phosphorescent OLED emission layer

Clint van Hoesel, Reinder Coehoorn, and Peter Bobbert

Phys. Rev. B 111, 224204 (2025) - Published 12 June, 2025

From quantum chemical calculations, triplet-polaron quenching in phosphorescent Ir(ppy)2acac:m-MTDATA host–guest films, such as those used in OLEDs, is shown to be governed not only by dipole–dipole Förster transfer, as is often assumed, but also by quadrupolar interactions. At typical emitter-host separations, quadrupolar contributions even dominate. This work quantifies these contributions by generalizing Förster spectral overlap method to dipole-quadrupole coupling, based on near-field quadrupolar absorption. The study resolves a discrepancy between Förster radii found from spectral overlap calculations and device experiments.

Experimental study of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger edge modes for water waves in linear and nonlinear regimes

Adam Anglart, Paweł Obrępalski, Agnès Maurel, Philippe Petitjeans, and Vincent Pagneux

Phys. Rev. B 111, 224311 (2025) - Published 30 June, 2025

The authors experimentally investigate here the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in a periodic water wave channel, observing robust topological edge modes consistent with theoretical predictions and 2D simulations. Remarkably, these sloshing modes localized at the boundaries persist under nonlinear excitation, where bifurcations and secondary resonances emerge. This work connects topological physics and fluid mechanics, providing an accessible platform for exploring wave localization, symmetry protection, and nonlinear dynamics in classical wave systems.

Spin chain with non-Hermitian PT-symmetric boundary couplings: Exact solution, dissipative Kondo effect, and phase transitions on the edge

Pradip Kattel, Parameshwar R. Pasnoori, J. H. Pixley, and Natan Andrei

Phys. Rev. B 111, 224407 (2025) - Published 4 June, 2025

The authors construct here an exactly solvable 𝒫𝒯-symmetric non-Hermitian Heisenberg spin chain with complex-conjugate boundary Kondo couplings. They show that the model exhibits three distinct boundary phases: dissipative Kondo screening with unbroken 𝒫𝒯 symmetry, bound-mode phases featuring spontaneously broken 𝒫𝒯 symmetry and complex-conjugate eigenvalues, and an unscreened local-moment phase with a purely real spectrum. Benchmarking with non-Hermitian DMRG demonstrates quantitative agreement with Bethe ansatz, validating tensor-network methods for open quantum systems.

Experimental realization of antiferromagnetic Ising ground state on the triangular lattice

Ke Wang, Xing-Jian Liu, Li-Ming Tu, Jia-Jie Zhang, Vladimir N. Gladilin, and Jun-Yi Ge

Phys. Rev. B 111, 224418 (2025) - Published 18 June, 2025

Here, the authors experimentally realize an antiferromagnetic Ising ground state on a rigid triangular lattice using macroscopic magnets. The as grown protocol, vibrational thermalization, and simulations reveal that magnets spontaneously form a striped phase in cylindrical cavities, where the lowest-energy configuration emerges from collective dipolar interactions rather than pairwise Ising behavior. These results demonstrate the observation of a long-predicted geometrically frustrated ground state and establish a tunable macroscopic platform for studying ideal frustration physics.

Impurity states in altermagnetic superconductors

Andrea Maiani and Rubén Seoane Souto

Phys. Rev. B 111, 224506 (2025) - Published 12 June, 2025

Altermagnetic superconductors have been predicted as a new class of materials with potential for novel phases of matter, but have not been demonstrated so far. The authors show here that a single nonmagnetic impurity induces spin-polarized bound states with distinctive “cross-shaped” spatial patterns that follow the hidden Néel order. The orientation of these states leads to spin-selective coupling between impurities. The predicted signatures—spatial extent and energy splitting as a function of magnetic field—are observable via scanning tunneling microscopy, offering a route to identify altermagnetic superconductivity and control atomic-scale quantum tunneling.

Gapped magnetic ground state in the spin-liquid candidate κ−(BEDT−TTF)2Ag2(CN)3 suggested by magnetic spectroscopy

Phys. Rev. B 111, L220404 (2025) - Published 4 June, 2025

The putative quantum spin liquid compound κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Ag2(CN)3 is investigated here by multifrequency electron spin resonance spectroscopy. At high temperatures, the spin susceptibility exhibits a weak temperature dependence, which can be described by the Heisenberg model with an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. At low temperatures, however, the rapid drop of the static spin susceptibility, together with monotonic decrease of the ESR linewidth indicates that strong singlet correlations develop below a pairing energy scale accompanied by a spin gap.

Theory for tunnel magnetoresistance oscillation

Phys. Rev. B 111, L220406 (2025) - Published 9 June, 2025

The authors propose here a theory for the oscillation of the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio as a function of the insulating barrier thickness, called the “TMR oscillation”, which is a long-standing puzzle in spintronics. The essence of this theory is to consider the superposition of wave functions with opposite spins and different Fermi momenta, induced by the exchange interaction at the interface. This theory reproduces all the existing experimental observations on the TMR oscillation.

Deconfined quantum criticality in a frustrated Haldane chain with single-ion anisotropy

Niels T. Pronk, Bowy M. La Rivière, and Natalia Chepiga

Phys. Rev. B 111, L220412 (2025) - Published 30 June, 2025

Quantum phase transitions between two phases of matter with incompatible orders that cannot be described by conventional theories is a phenomena known as deconfined quantum criticality. The authors show here that the 1+1D version of this exotic quantum phase transition appears in the frustrated Haldane chain with a single-ion anisotropy, where it separates the Ising antiferromagnet and dimerized phases and belongs to the eight-vertex universality class. At zero anisotropy, this transition is fused with an Ising one into the Wess-Zumino-Witten SU(2)2 critical point.
