High-fidelity ground-state cooling in 2D and 3D optical lattices, crucial for diverse quantum applications, is achieved via chirped sideband cooling on an optical clock transition. This approach is broadly applicable to alkaline-earth-like atoms, particularly bosonic isotopes, with the frequency chirp compensating for inherent trap inhomogeneities that are accurately captured by theoretical modeling.

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L042060 (2025) - Published 10 December, 2025

Starting with lower-charge and shorter electron beams at the injector of a free-electron laser (FEL) is shown to enhance the generation of short pulses via strong compression. Hard x-ray FEL radiation is produced in which virtually all pulses consist of a single spike with estimated pulse durations of 300 attoseconds.
