Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 023602 (2017) - Published 27 February, 2017

When tracking oil drops rising in the ocean, it is important to consider settings as realistically as possible, for example, accounting for surfactant effects and pycnoclines in the ocean. Simulations are presented that quantify the effects of both.

Gianluca Iaccarino, Aashwin Ananda Mishra, and Saman Ghili

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024605 (2017) - Published 27 February, 2017

A framework to estimate the model inadequacy in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes closures via perturbations to the modeled Reynolds stress is presented. It requires no data or user-defined inputs, and it gives reliable uncertainty bounds of engineering utility with minimal computational expense, across a variety of flows.

Scaling laws and bounds for the turbulent G.O. Roberts dynamo

A. Tilgner

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024606 (2017) - Published 27 February, 2017

Exact bounds are derived for the total energy in magnetohydrodynamic flows generating a magnetic field, and they conform with the Kolmogorov phenomenology of turbulence. Rigorous bounds interpreted as equalities agree to within an order of magnitude with numerical simulations of dynamos with a helical flow field.

Temporal and spatial intermittencies within channel flow turbulence near transition

Anubhav Kushwaha, Jae Sung Park, and Michael D. Graham

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024603 (2017) - Published 24 February, 2017

Spatiotemporal intermittency in transitional channel flow turbulence in an extended domain is related to temporal intermittency in the minimal channel. Near-wall flow structures and mean profiles in regions of low drag closely resemble those found in low drag temporal intervals in the minimal channel.

Two-point coherence of wave packets in turbulent jets

V. Jaunet, P. Jordan, and A. V. G. Cavalieri

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024604 (2017) - Published 24 February, 2017

Dual-plane, high-cadence, stereoscopic particle-image velocimetry of a turbulent jet is used to investigate the spatial structure of the acoustically important wave packets; these are shown to have fundamentally different coherence decay and phase speed from energy-containing eddies that dominate pointwise measurements.

Unsteady flow structure and loading of a pitching low-aspect-ratio wing

Miguel R. Visbal

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024703 (2017) - Published 24 February, 2017

High-fidelity simulations examine dynamic stall over a pitching aspect-ratio-two wing. Dynamic stall leads to an arch-type vortex which can sustain high lift. The arch vortex persists after pitch-up motion ceases. This results from the self-induced velocity of the combined vortex/image system.

Diffusivity and hydrodynamic drag of nanoparticles at a vapor-liquid interface

Joel Koplik and Charles Maldarelli

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024303 (2017) - Published 23 February, 2017

Molecular dynamic simulations of interfacial colloidal particles either diffusing or dragged along a liquid-vapor interface show that the Stokes-Einstein relation correctly relates the two processes, but the finite width of the interface results in deviations from continuum hydrodynamics.

Topology and stability of a water-soybean-oil swirling flow

Luis Carrión, Miguel A. Herrada, and Vladimir N. Shtern

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024702 (2017) - Published 22 February, 2017

A numerical study reveals the topology and instability in the flow of water and soybean oil in a sealed vertical cylindrical container driven by a rotating lid.

Coherent structures in interacting vortex rings

Jian Deng, Jingyu Xue, Xuerui Mao, and C. P. Caulfield

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 022701(R) (2017) - Published 21 February, 2017

Broadly consistent with linear stability analyses, experiments find that highly organized nonlinear structures with clear azimuthal wave number emerge as sequential vortex rings are shed from a sinusoidally oscillating ellipsoidal disk.

Liquid-film coating on topographically patterned rotating cylinders

Weihua Li, Marcio S. Carvalho, and Satish Kumar

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024001 (2017) - Published 21 February, 2017

Results from a full 2D numerical model of flow of a liquid film on a topographically patterned rotating cylinder reveal that a uniform coating can be obtained when there is the right interplay between gravity, surface tension, and rotation.

Mahdy Malekzadeh Moghani and Bamin Khomami

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 023303 (2017) - Published 17 February, 2017

An efficient algorithm for temporal evolution of the bead-rod model of polymeric chains and a method to estimate transient polymer contributions to the stress tensor provide insight into the dynamics and rheological behavior of dilute polymeric solutions of long flexible chains with hydrodynamic interactions.

Jet dynamics post drop impact on a deep pool

Guy-Jean Michon, Christophe Josserand, and Thomas Séon

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 023601 (2017) - Published 16 February, 2017

A liquid jet from drop impact on a liquid surface is one of the most iconic images of fluid mechanics. An experimental investigation shows that these jets can emerge with very different shapes and velocities, depending on whether the jet is sparked by capillary wave collapse or by whole cavity retraction.

Rotating Rayleigh-Taylor instability

M. M. Scase, K. A. Baldwin, and R. J. A. Hill

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 024801 (2017) - Published 15 February, 2017

Rotating fluids are subject to the Coriolis force. This restoring force can act to stabilize a gravitationally unstable interface between two fluids of differing density and may therefore be used to inhibit the evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability and change its physical characteristics.

Jianchun Wang, Toshiyuki Gotoh, and Takeshi Watanabe

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 023401 (2017) - Published 14 February, 2017

Mathieu Jenny, Sébastien Kiesgen de Richter, Nicolas Louvet, Salahedine Skali-Lami, and Yvan Dossmann

Phys. Rev. Fluids 2, 023302 (2017) - Published 10 February, 2017

According to Houska’s structural parameter model, shear banding may appear in the flow of nonviscoelastic, thixotropic yield stress fluids. New work shows that the linear stability analysis leads to similar results as in Bingham-like fluids.
