Nonlocal machine-learned exchange functional for molecules and solids

Phys. Rev. B 110, 075130 (2024) - Published 15 August, 2024

Here, the authors use machine learning and exact physical constraints to design a nonlocal exchange functional for both molecular and solid-state systems. The model is computationally efficient, achieves hybrid-DFT accuracy on molecular benchmarks, and improves the accuracy of band gap predictions over semilocal DFT. To demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the model, the authors compute charged point defect transition levels in silicon in good agreement with experiment, a task previously only possible with more expensive hybrid DFT calculations.

The authors investigate here the energy and momentum relaxation in the Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 using linear and nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy. They find that the temperature dependence of these rates is consistent with quasielastic phonon-electron scattering down to the lowest temperatures measured. These findings highlight how the Dirac semimetal’s unique lattice dynamics, including its low thermal conductivity and soft phonons, offers new insights into potential applications of Cd3As2 for electronic and optoelectronic devices.

A novel approach to the deterministic control of antiferromagnetic domains by applied stress is demonstrated, using resonant elastic x-ray scattering to simultaneously probe both antiferromagnetic order and the crystal structure. The authors exploit the spin Jahn-Teller effect, whereby an applied stress couples to magnetostructural strains that modulate magnetic frustration arising from competing exchange interactions. In the exemplary system under study, CoTi2O5, complete domain switching was achieved by strains of less than 0.01%.

Heat flow in superconducting circuits is emerging as an important theme of research. In this field, the authors make two theoretical advances. First, they demonstrate that heat current across a quantum impurity is expressed compactly in terms of a dynamical susceptibility that fully incorporates many-body physics. Second, they apply their formalism to the Schmid quantum phase transition between superconducting and insulating ground states. They unveil new signatures of that transition in the temperature dependence of thermal conductance, thus motivating further experimental studies.

Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIP) have shown great promise in predicting material properties when tailored for specific applications in mind. However, they face limitations when expanded to capture a diverse set of local atomic environments. Here, the authors introduce a novel method to construct environment-adaptive machine-learned (EAML) interatomic potentials by adapting to the local atomic environment of each atom. The approach shows a significant improvement in the accuracy of the EAML potential compared to the current state-of-the-art, paving the way for a new class of MLIPs.
