As compared to other prominent twisted-layered systems that feature flat bands, twisted helical trilayer graphene at magic angles displays flat bands with Chern number higher than one, and features a Chern mosaic. The authors show here intriguing topological phase transitions with increasing Chern numbers in the flat bands under a perpendicular magnetic field. The associated wavefunctions are derived, and a set of hidden wavefunctions are shown to play a crucial role in the topological transitions and increase of Chern numbers.

Isolated flat bands possessing high Chern numbers are highly prized in condensed matter physics. Here, the authors propose realizing high Chern number flat-band states through moiré engineering of the two coupled Dirac-cone surface states of antiferromagnetic topological insulator thin films. The emergent Dirac-cone states induced from the anisotropic intersurface couplings, respecting multifold rotational symmetries, are dubbed intertwined Dirac states. They are found to play a significant role in this process. Furthermore, topological phase transitions between trivial and nontrivial flat-band states can be tuned by an out-of-plane electric field.

Phonon-mediated heat conduction in high-purity crystals is governed by Fourier’s law for diffusive transport and by phonon-radiative transfer (PRT) between the surfaces for ballistic transport. PRT is characterized by a phonon mean free path (mfp) that is limited by the crystal size. The authors demonstrate here the crossover from diffusive to ballistic phonon transport for transparent wide-band gap ß-Ga2O3 MOCVD homoepitaxially grown layers on single crystal substrates. Such phonon-transparent interfaces may be employed to design heat flow in future cryogenic electronic devices.

The authors investigate here the effect of focused laser beam irradiationon a V2O3 thin film at the Mott transition. Whether a metallic orinsulating phase is predominantly induced by laser scanning depends on the thermal history, i.e., whether the film is at the insulator-to-metal or the metal-to-insulator transition. This unexpected behavior challenges our current understanding, as the laser actually raises the local temperature and should drive the thin film toward the metallic state.
