Secondary “smile”-gap in the density of states of a diffusive Josephson junction for a wide range of contact types

J. Reutlinger, L. Glazman, Yu. V. Nazarov, and W. Belzig

Phys. Rev. B 90, 014521 (2014) - Published 31 July, 2014

The authors generalize previous calculations, to show that a predicted gap feature in the density of states of a chaotic cavity between superconductors remains under a broad range of contact types. In particular, they reveal that the gap feature is not restricted to a ballistic cavity, but is a more general property of these systems, which should facilitate experimental detection.

Toroidal order in metals without local inversion symmetry

Satoru Hayami, Hiroaki Kusunose, and Yukitoshi Motome

Phys. Rev. B 90, 024432 (2014) - Published 31 July, 2014

The hallmark of the toroidal order T in solids is the presence of the cross-coupling term T⋅(H×E) in the free energy of the system that leads to antisymmetric magneto-electric effect. In the last several years toroidal order has attracted interest in connection with multiferroic insulating materials. The authors of this manuscript show that such an exotic order can occur even in metallic systems on lattice structures where the spatial-inversion symmetry is preserved globally but broken intrinsically at each magnetic site. They suggest a uranium compound UNi4B as a candidate material where such a state can be realized.

Charge-density-wave order with momentum (2Q,0) and (0,2Q) within the spin-fermion model: Continuous and discrete symmetry breaking, preemptive composite order, and relation to pseudogap in hole-doped cuprates

Yuxuan Wang and Andrey Chubukov

Phys. Rev. B 90, 035149 (2014) - Published 31 July, 2014

The authors show that cuprate pseudogap physics can be well understood within the same spin-fermion model which yields d-wave superconductivity and non-Fermi-liquid physics in the normal state. Thus, the spin-fermion model re-emerges as a strong candidate for the theoretical model of the cuprates.

Jean-Marie Stéphan

Phys. Rev. B 90, 045424 (2014) - Published 25 July, 2014

The author studies the Shannon and Renyi mutual information in gapless spin chains. He shows the universal coefficient governing the Shannon mutual information is close to but not identical to the spin chain’s central charge.

Improved domain-wall dynamics and magnonic torques using topological insulators

Jacob Linder

Phys. Rev. B 90, 041412(R) (2014) - Published 24 July, 2014

The author investigates the magnetization dynamics of a thin-film ferromagnet deposited on a topological insulator. The interaction between the two leads to higher attainable domain wall velocities and makes possible domain wall motion and spin-transfer torques even in the absence of electric currents.

Realization of a single-Cooper-pair Josephson laser

Fei Chen, Juliang Li, A. D. Armour, E. Brahimi, Joel Stettenheim, A. J. Sirois, R. W. Simmonds, M. P. Blencowe, and A. J. Rimberg

Phys. Rev. B 90, 020506(R) (2014) - Published 22 July, 2014

The authors couple a microwave cavity to a voltage-biased Cooper-pair transistor, which emits photons at the Josephson frequency 2eVħ. If that frequency matches the cavity frequency, photons build up in it, which in turn creates back-action on the Cooper-pair transistor leading to stimulated rather than spontaneous tunneling.

Sarah B. Etter, Hirono Kaneyasu, Matthias Ossadnik, and Manfred Sigrist

Phys. Rev. B 90, 024515 (2014) - Published 18 July, 2014

The authors offer an explanation for nonstandard behavior observed in Pb/Ru/Sr2RuO4 Josephson junctions in terms of frustration arising from the topologically nontrivial order parameter, if one considers Sr2RuO4 as a chiral p-wave superconductor.

Phys. Rev. B 90, 024408 (2014) - Published 15 July, 2014

MnWO4 is a multiferroic material with spontaneous electric polarization induced by spiral magnetic order. One of its puzzling properties is the so called “X phase” that appears at applied magnetic fields above 10 Tesla and in a narrow temperature range at about 10 Kelvin. The phase transition from the low-field incommensurate magnetic cycloid phase into the X phase is characterized by a switch of the direction in the polarization. In this article a collaboration of authors from Spain, France, and Russia study the X-phase using neutron diffraction and determine its magnetic structure and the nature of the unusual polarization flop.

Phys. Rev. B 90, 045305 (2014) - Published 14 July, 2014

This work shows a direct method for the observation of light-matter interactions in a semiconductor optical amplifier. Of high significance is that the experiments are carried out at room temperature in the presence of many body scatting processes which was thought to induce very rapid decoherence.

Phys. Rev. B 90, 014408 (2014) - Published 10 July, 2014

The magnetic sublattice of A3MM’O3 family of compounds can be described as a set of magnetic chains forming a triangular lattice. Using state-of-the-art neutron diffraction experiments, the authors investigate the anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility and other unconventional magnetic properties for a member of this family, Sr3NiIrO3, which are thought to result from the interplay of low dimensionality, magnetic frustration, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

By investigating the infrared spectroscopic aspects of the pseudogap in prototypical cuprate and pnictide superconductors, the authors demonstrate that the former is not related to precursor superconductivity but rather has a direct bearing to the antiferromagnetic state of the parent materials.

Phys. Rev. B 90, 020501(R) (2014) - Published 8 July, 2014

The authors reveal subtle features in the topological classification of a general class of Hamiltonians, which in turn leads to the discovery of three distinct fractional Josephson effects for superconductors with time-reversal symmetry.
