Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022032 (2026) - Published 18 May, 2026

Abnormally large learning rates in the optimization of neural networks induce a transition to chaos of the training dynamics, where the network eventually loses its ability to learn the correct representation. However, close to the onset of chaotic network trajectories, the network still learns and can do so at an accelerated pace.

Automated discovery of nonlocal photonic gates

Sören Arlt, Mario Krenn, and Xuemei Gu

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022031 (2026) - Published 18 May, 2026

This work presents experimental proposals for nonlocal photonic quantum gates that act on spatially separated photons by exploiting quantum indistinguishability via path identity rather than preshared entanglement or Bell-state measurements. The underlying ideas were generated by the multiagent large language model system AI-Mᴀɴᴅᴇʟ, translated into concrete experimental blueprints by the automated quantum-optics design tool PʏTʜᴇᴜs, and subsequently interpreted and generalized into broader design principles.

Winding-control mechanism of non-Hermitian systems

Yongxu Fu and Yi Zhang

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022030 (2026) - Published 15 May, 2026

By introducing conditional boundary conditions, a winding-control mechanism is established in non-Hermitian systems that links the spectral winding number, the residual imaginary velocity, and the worldline winding number. This mechanism enables the selective collapse of specific loop-type periodic boundary condition spectra onto their open boundary condition counterparts, accompanied by a composite reconstruction of the Brillouin zone and the generalized Brillouin zone, thereby realizing a topological transition between distinct spectral winding configurations.

Influence of quantum fluctuations on the spin-flop transition in hematite

Tobias Dannegger, Imre Hagymási, Levente Rózsa, and Ulrich Nowak

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022029 (2026) - Published 15 May, 2026

An investigation of the spin-flop transition of a quantum spin model for hematite using different theoretical methods shows that, despite the presence of long-range order and large quantum numbers, correctly accounting for quantum fluctuations is essential to describe this phase transition accurately at low temperatures.

Stochastic resetting of Brownian motion in a harmonic potential always relaxes faster than thermal equilibration, with both the relaxation speed and the resulting nonequilibrium steady state governed by a single dimensionless parameter combining the resetting rate, viscosity, and potential stiffness.
