First-passage time distributions for classical stochastic processes have been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally. By contrast, these distributions for quantum dynamics remain largely unexplored and carry deep implications for both fundamental physics and the development of emerging quantum technologies. This work reports single-shot projective measurements of the quantized motion of a trapped ion subject to electric-field noise using composite-phase laser sequences. Such sequences act as an effective quantum filter for constructing quantum first-passage time distributions of the ion energy.
