The performance of any future spintronic device based on thin films or heterostructures may be compromised by thermal effects derived from Joule heating. For example, chemical interdiffusion processes may significantly alter the interface, thus threatening macroscopic behavior. Here thermally driven phenomena are studied in graphene-based magnetic epitaxial graphene/Co/Pt heterostructures. In-situ atomic resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy are used for direct visualization of thermally activated interdiffusion phenomena at Co/Pt interfaces in the 300 – 773 K range. Noticeable Co/Pt alloying takes place at temperatures above 523K, significantly enhancing the layer coercivity and offering a direct pathway for optimizing epitaxial systems for robust future device integration.

Coil-helix block copolymers, i.e. blocks with different chemistries and different conformations, are versatile building blocks due to the diverse range of conformational properties that the helical block (pitch, helical radius, persistence length) can adopt. This study uses coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to bridge the gap between geometrical and experimental studies of helical polymers by examining the effects of helical conformation on the lamellar phase. In particular, helical blocks with higher molecular aspect ratio and higher stiffness are found to enlarge domain sizes and to produce anisotropic effects such as nematic ordering and enhanced local helicity.

Gate-induced carrier control methods are powerful techniques for tuning quantum materials, but their applicability has been confined to thin-film systems. In this study, the authors present the concept of bulk-gating, where the gating technique is applied to a microdevice fabricated from a bulk single crystal of the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co4Sn2S2 using focused ion beam techniques. Through ionic gating, the authors achieve substantial electron doping exceeding 5×1021 cm−3 and a rigid-band-like Fermi level shift, while preserving the magnetic order and structural integrity. This work positions bulk-gating as a versatile platform for exploring carrier-controlled phases and topological phenomena beyond the traditional 2D landscape.
