New materials with specifically tailored properties are discovered at a growing rate, adding new data points in a space that is already vast and complex. In this Perspective, the authors illustrate the potential of leveraging network theory, aided by modern machine learning techniques, to efficiently navigate the space of materials. They discuss why network representations appear to be very well suited for understanding how such a space is shaped by allowing for the detection of hidden mesoscale structure and eventually guiding the discovery of new materials.
