Josephson junctions with topological weak links should support Majorana bound states, yet are challenging to fabricate without damaging the topological material. Here, the authors evaporate a noble metal onto a (BiSb)2Te3 topological insulator that chemically reacts, creating a self-formed superconductor while minimizing damage. The interface between the superconductor and untouched (BiSb)2Te3 has adequate interface transparency, and the two materials have similar work functions. Under microwave irradiation, they observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps, which supports the presence of Majorana bound states.

Detecting spin dynamics in quantum spin liquids presents significant challenges. Here, the authors explore photoinduced excitations in the Kitaev spin liquid candidate α-RuCl3 using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy. This method allows for a comprehensive characterization of different photoinduced components. They identify signatures of spin excitations within the Kitaev paramagnetic phase. The two distinct lifetimes observed in this temperature regime, on the order of tens of picoseconds, likely correspond to the dynamics of unconventional spin excitations predicted by the Kitaev model.

Phys. Rev. B 110, 064317 (2024) - Published 20 August, 2024

The authors demonstrate here that, for open systems quenched using finite-ramp protocols, dissipation results in a delay in detecting phase transitions if a threshold-based criterion for an order parameter is used. This leads to a regime for intermediate quench speeds, in which the transition time follows the predicted universal scaling of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, despite the system appearing to enter a new phase after the ramp has ended. Their results highlight the subtleties of experimentally observing phase transitions in open systems.

For three-dimensional semiconductors and insulators, the authors elaborate here that the imaginary part of dielectric function integrated over frequency gives the spread of valence-band Wannier functions, which characterizes how insulating is the material. For two-dimensional materials, their opacity divided by frequency and then integrated over frequency does the same job.
