This study investigates the behavior of wave functions in parity-time (𝒫𝒯) symmetric quantum systems, focusing on their spread and localization. Using a tight-binding chain model, the authors explore the dynamics under 𝒫𝒯 symmetry and its breaking. By employing innovative quantum information measures, such as complexity, entropy, and inverse participation ratio in Krylov space, they quantify the wave function’s distribution. In the 𝒫𝒯-symmetric phase, the wave function spreads evenly, while 𝒫𝒯 symmetry breaking leads to localization, exemplifying the non-Hermitian skin effect and edge modes.

Disentangling nucleation and propagation of magnetization reversal in exchange-biased thin films

M. Usama Hasan and Geoffrey S. D. Beach

Phys. Rev. B 110, 064424 (2024) - Published 22 August, 2024

Understanding how exchange bias (EB) –- an effect utilized in many spintronic devices – affects basic magnetization reversal processes like domain nucleation and propagation is important both fundamentally and practically. Here, the authors describe a way to disentangle the EB field for domain nucleation and propagation in thin films. They find that nucleation EB can be quite varied, in contrast to propagation EB, and the two can differ significantly. Among other consequences, this can lead to hysteresis loop asymmetry, a widely observed yet partially understood phenomenon.

Here, the authors use muon and neutron spectroscopies to establish the magnetic ground state of the candidate rare-earth Kitaev model compound Na2PrO3. They find that the magnetism is drastically modified from what is required to realize Kitaev physics, and that local atomic physics simultaneously contributes to a vanishing static moment and an intense two-magnon continuum. These findings demonstrate how two hallmarks of quantum fluctuations, a vanishing static magnetic moment and an intense continuum of magnetic excitations, can arise in the absence of magnetic frustration.

Open quantum systems are ubiquitous, however, their description beyond ultraweak system-bath coupling is challenging. The standard Redfield master equation can violate positivity. Recently, Nathan and Rudner proposed an alternative equation, not suffering from this problem. The authors compare here both equations to the exact solution of a simple model. The Redfield equation performs noticeably better for transient dynamics. For the steady state it is slightly better for high temperatures, but fails at low temperatures, where the Nathan-Rudner equation is still accurate.
