Quantum criticality is believed to be avoided in ferromagnetic metals for fundamental reasons, which gives rise to a manifold of realized phase diagrams. Here, the authors revisit the temperature-pressure phase diagram of a prime example system (LaCrGe3), to explore the avoided criticality by thermodynamic and microscopic techniques. The results strongly suggest that a short-range magnetically ordered cluster phase emerges as the ferromagnetic transition is suppressed towards zero temperature. This insight points towards the influence of disorder that is inevitably present even in stoichiometric compounds.

Magnetic frustration can produce exotic spin configurations and dynamics. Here, the authors explore the seemingly simple competition between ferromagnetic nearest- and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions along Ising spin chains, as realized in the magnetoelectric compound Lu2CoMnO6. Commonly, this situation is described by the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model. For the first time, the authors measure and calculate its correlated magnetic dynamics, resulting from a characteristic fractal set of first-order phase boundaries. Experiments and Monte Carlo simulations reveal a dynamics slowdown while approaching the phase transition regime.
