Interband mixing in Dirac semimetals has been known theoretically to give rise to a giant orbital diamagnetism when the Fermi level is close to the Dirac point. Here, the authors report a 207Pb NMR study on the three-dimensional Dirac antiperovskite system Sr3PbO. The analysis of the Knight shift, the magnetic susceptibility, and the spin-lattice relaxation rate for samples with different Fermi levels shows that the enhanced diamagnetism in the bulk magnetic susceptibility of Sr3PbO does indeed originate from the orbital contribution of Dirac electrons.

X rays have been used to image the spin directions in an antiferromagnetic thin film of hematite (α-Fe2O3) and show how they reorient in response to electrical pulses. Spin switching is shown to depend on the current direction and occurs even outside the current path. The results here show that, in addition to any direct interaction between the electrical current and the spins, thermal effects lead to spin reorientation, highlighting the delicate balance of interactions important to understanding the physics of current-induced switching in antiferromagnets.

Photoinduced phase transitions have been intensively studied owing to their promising potential for next-generation devices. Here, the authors develop a novel analysis method: the so-called frequency-domain ARPES (FDARPES). They extend a well established measurement method of time-domain ARPES to detect how electrons are interacting with phonons during the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition for Ta2NiSe5. They successfully unravel the underlying nature of the photoinduced phase transition. This method has general applicability to other photoinduced phase transitions, including photoinduced magnetism or superconductivity.
