L. Besombes and H. Boukari

Phys. Rev. B 89, 085315 (2014) - Published 28 February, 2014

The authors fabricate strain-free shallow CdTe/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum dots containing isolated Mn atoms. The reduction in strain-induced magnetic anisotropy yields optical and dynamical properties qualitatively different from those of the strained self-assembled dots studied previously.

Close to the critical composition for this alloy, muon spin rotation and relaxation show spins clustered with short-range order, not isolated.

Effect of spin fluctuations on quasiparticle excitations: First-principles theory and application to sodium and lithium

Johannes Lischner, Timur Bazhirov, Allan H. MacDonald, Marvin L. Cohen, and Steven G. Louie

Phys. Rev. B 89, 081108(R) (2014) - Published 19 February, 2014

To understand from first principles how spin and charge fluctuations affect quasiparticle excitations, start with simple alkali metals, not high-Tc superconductors. Spin fluctuations alone cannot account for the experimentally observed reduction in occupied bandwidth.

Phys. Rev. B 89, 060503(R) (2014) - Published 18 February, 2014

Proposed over 30 years ago, this collective excitation is seen via Raman spectroscopy in the title selenide compound yet not its sulfide cousin, which lacks charge-density-wave order.

H. T. M. Nghiem and T. A. Costi

Phys. Rev. B 89, 075118 (2014) - Published 18 February, 2014

This paper generalizes to arbitrary temperature the time-dependent numerical renormalization group (NRG), a widely used approach for calculating the response of a quantum-impurity system subjected to a sudden local change. A scheme for multiple quenches is also presented.

Dynamics of spin-flip photon-assisted tunneling

F. R. Braakman, J. Danon, L. R. Schreiber, W. Wegscheider, and L. M. K. Vandersypen

Phys. Rev. B 89, 075417 (2014) - Published 18 February, 2014

To use spin-flip photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) to couple two-electron spin states in quantum information processing, identifying its parameters is essential. The authors estimate the spin-flip PAT coupling strength and relaxation and dephasing timescales for double quantum dots.

Relaxation of optically excited carriers in graphene: Anomalous diffusion and Lévy flights

U. Briskot, I. A. Dmitriev, and A. D. Mirlin

Phys. Rev. B 89, 075414 (2014) - Published 13 February, 2014

This relaxation is peculiar due to the Dirac nature of the fermions in graphene. For example, the cascade of energy jumps is statistically described by Lévy processes.

Gauge fluctuations and interlayer coherence in bilayer composite fermion metals

R. Cipri and N. E. Bonesteel

Phys. Rev. B 89, 085109 (2014) - Published 11 February, 2014

Fluctuations of the gauge fields suppress interlayer phase coherence, for a composite Fermi liquid in a quantum Hall bilayer with total filling factor of 1. This could explain why the interlayer coherent state has not been observed experimentally in such a system.
