Infrared absorption spectroscopy is vital to identifying point defects in semiconductors, though it is challenged by complicated defect systems involving symmetry-broken multiatomic vibrations, based on traditional group-theory analysis. This work meets that challenge by combining polarization-resolved infrared spectroscopy with first-principles calculations of defect-vibration-induced dipole-moment variations (DMVs). Thus the authors are able to reveal the MgGa-VN complex in p-type GaN as a pertinent example, by determining the DMV for all three local vibrational modes, both experimentally and theoretically.

High-resolution, broadband spectroscopy is essential for precision measurements in atomic physics and the search for new fundamental interactions, but progress is often hindered by the difficulty of measuring complex, dense atomic spectra—especially for rare-earth elements. This Letter presents enhanced multichannel dual-comb spectroscopy that combines a photodetector array with a scheme for resolving frequency ambiguities. The technique reveals unanticipated absorption lines for samarium, demonstrating the method’s discovery potential and pointing to massively parallel spectroscopy for e.g. studying atoms in pulsed ultrahigh magnetic fields.
