Phys. Rev. Research 5, L012003 (2023) - Published 12 January, 2023

A systematic construction and classification of decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) for open many-body systems is provided by uncovering the relation of DFS to symmetries (constants of motion).

Controlling mode orientations and frequencies in levitated cavity optomechanics

A. Pontin, H. Fu, J. H. Iacoponi, P. F. Barker, and T. S. Monteiro

Phys. Rev. Research 5, 013013 (2023) - Published 12 January, 2023

The x-y motion of a nanosphere levitated in a tweezer trap in a cavity has applications as a quantum sensor for the direction of ultraweak external forces. The backaction of the optical field of the cavity rotates the orientation of the x-y modes. An experimental demonstration shows the accurate measurement, control, and even suppression of the change in orientation relative to the lab frame.

Phys. Rev. Research 5, L012002 (2023) - Published 10 January, 2023

Rabi oscillations in atomic vapor cells that exhibit strong population dynamics are in a parameter space outside of theoretical studies of hyperfine coherence defined by spin-exchange collisions. Continuous nondestructive readout of microwave-driven Rabi oscillations is employed to guide a theoretical model and extract vapor-cell parameters from the nontrivial time-domain signals arising from spin-exchange effects.

Dynamics of three-dimensional stepped cracks, bistability, and their transition to simple cracks

Meng Wang, Mokhtar Adda-Bedia, and Jay Fineberg

Phys. Rev. Research 5, L012001 (2023) - Published 9 January, 2023

Highly dissipative slow and faceted cracks, which are topologically conserved, are the norm for slow fractures. Perturbations that momentarily break front topology will cause faceted cracks to lose stability at a critical velocity to rapid continuous crack fronts that have no internal structure.

Phys. Rev. Research 5, 013005 (2023) - Published 6 January, 2023

Neurons in the brain organize in spatially connected networks. This analytical work shows that interactions between neurons in spatially arranged networks generate correlated fluctuations on multiple spatial and temporal scales. The spatial and temporal scales of correlations are interdependent and jointly defined by the connectivity profile.

Phys. Rev. Research 4, L042051 (2022) - Published 30 December, 2022

The challenge of maximizing dispersion of a dynamical process over a globally unknown network is overcome by introducing an adaptive random walk. This adaptive random walk, through a large-deviation-theory approach, updates its transition rule on the local information collected while exploring the network.
