Dual role of longitudinal optical phonons for generation of coherent oscillations in gallium arsenide under optical pumping

Itsuki Takagi, Yuma Konno, Yosuke Kayanuma, and Kazutaka G. Nakamura

Phys. Rev. B 110, 024314 (2024) - Published 29 July, 2024

The authors propose here a simple picture of the generation dynamics of coherent optical phonons and phonon-plasmon coupled modes by ultrafast infrared pulses in gallium arsenide. This picture can explain the spectral coexistence of the bare phonons and the phonon-plasmon coupled modes by their being in different subspaces of Hilbert space (electronic ground and excited states), rather than separated in real space. The quantum mechanical calculations reproduce well the coherent oscillations obtained in transient reflectivity measurements.

Shear viscosity of interacting graphene

Phys. Rev. B 110, 045443 (2024) - Published 29 July, 2024

The authors investigate here the hydrodynamic regime of ultraclean graphene, which has shown experimental signatures of flow phenomena. They propose that plasmons, a collective mode associated with charge density oscillations, form a collective fluid together with electrons and holes and demonstrate that plasmons significantly enhance the shear viscosity. Technically, the authors use a combination of a full numerical solution of coupled Boltzmann equations in combination with more phenomenological methods. This work sheds light on the potentially substantial role of collective modes in the hydrodynamic behavior of not only graphene but also two-dimensional electronic systems in general.

Giant resonant skew scattering of plasma waves in a two-dimensional electron gas

Cooper Finnigan and Dmitry K. Efimkin

Phys. Rev. B 110, L041406 (2024) - Published 29 July, 2024

While electron skew scattering by impurities is one of the major mechanisms behind the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic nanostructures, it’s not probed directly. The authors theoretically study here the skew scattering of plasma waves off of a micromagnet. They argue that it is giant and resonant due to a chiral interface mode circulating the magnet. This setup allows direct probes into individual skew scattering events, and provides insights into magnetic impurity scattering of Dirac electrons at the surface of topological insulators.

Moiré metal for catalysis

Yang Zhang, Claudia Felser, and Liang Fu

Phys. Rev. B 110, L041407 (2024) - Published 29 July, 2024

This study establishes a recipe for designing superior catalysts from the simple twist or stacking of formerly inactive catalytic metals, and proposes structural moiré as a promising nanoengineering method to tune surface properties for chemical adsorption. In a broad sense, the moiré engineering of surface chemical properties provides a physical way for the rational design of superior electrocatalysts for a variety of chemical reactions under different environmental conditions. This work brings the new concept of the “moiré metal”, going beyond the previous moiré semiconductor, which paves the new direction for two-dimensional materials and heterogeneous catalysis.

Cavity-enhanced Kondo effect

Phys. Rev. B 110, 035158 (2024) - Published 26 July, 2024

Cavity confinement of quantum materials can induce a strong coupling between the electronic system and the quantum electromagnetic field, potentially leading to novel quantum phenomena of light and matter. The authors study here how the ultrastrong light-matter coupling can affect the Kondo effect. Nonperturbative analyses show that the ultrastrong coupling can enhance the Kondo temperature and give rise to several notable phenomena, including universal scalings of the cavity-modified Kondo effect, the photon occupation number, and the entanglement entropy between the cavity and electrons.

Phys. Rev. B 110, 045147 (2024) - Published 26 July, 2024

Spatial current patterns observed on the macroscale encode information about carrier dynamics on the microscale. In particular, vortices, manifested through currents flowing against externally applied electric fields, attract interest as a telltale signature of electron hydrodynamics. Previous studies have often regarded vorticity as a distinct feature of the hydrodynamic phase. Here, the authors explore the conditions under which vortex patterns can arise in electron systems, finding that the requirements for vortices prove to be considerably less stringent than previous work have suggested.
