Pb and Pb-Bi alloys are prototypes of strongly coupled superconductors, combining fascinating physics with application potential. Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cubic Pb is already strong, with λ≃1.5 and Tc=7.2 K. The work here demonstrates how alloying Pb with Bi — through electron doping, a cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition, and strong spin-orbit coupling — produces an alloy with record-strong EPC (λ≃2) and a higher Tc=8.6 K. Furthermore, the alloy’s anisotropic superconducting gap structure and strong electron scattering influence its thermodynamic properties, deviating from isotropic BCS and Eliashberg theories.

The negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV−) center in diamond is a well-known color center with interesting applications in nanoscale sensing and quantum metrology, due to its high sensitivity to minute local electric, magnetic, and strain fields. Motivated by these applications of the this center, the authors employ here first-principles calculations based on quantum embedding to derive a many-body description of its excited-state dipole couplings and strain susceptibilities, which underlie the electric field and strain induced Stark effects.
