Understanding how thermal and quantum fluctuations of phonon degrees of freedom affect the low-temperature thermodynamics of a freestanding crystalline membrane poses a complex problem at the interface between elasticity, statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory. In this work, the authors apply field-theoretical renormalization-group methods to revisit the role of mechanical nonlinearities and anharmonic effects on the behavior of thermodynamical quantities in the limit T→0.

Turbulence remains one of the last unsolved problems of classical physics. Here, the authors present insights from the nucleation and evolution of the simpler quantum turbulence. They generate turbulence mechanically, and image the dynamics nondestructively through illumination of thermal quasiparticles. At low temperatures, the ballistic quasiparticles are Andreev-reflected by the vortex flow fields, producing a shadow which shows that the tangle is asymmetrical. This suggests that the vortex rings - precursors of quantum turbulence - are unevenly created by the generator.

Phys. Rev. B 105, 195138 (2022) - Published 25 May, 2022

The authors present the self-consistent implementation and validation of MGGA density functionals in the highly accurate all-electron augmented plane wave based (APW) method for the simulation of solid-state materials. MGGA functionals are the third level of density functional approximations on Jacob’s ladder of exchange-correlation functionals. The implementation in the WIEN2k APW based code is discussed and validated using calculations of band gaps, lattice constants, magnetic properties, and electric field gradients.

Variational methods for contracting projected entangled-pair states

Phys. Rev. B 105, 195140 (2022) - Published 25 May, 2022

Projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) provide excellent variational wave functions for ground states of strongly correlated quantum systems in two dimensions. Determining the expectation value of such a PEPS wave function requires the contraction of a two-dimensional tensor network. Here, the authors show that this contraction can itself be formulated as a variational problem, allowing one to compare the accuracies of two commonly used contraction schemes. The authors find good agreement between the different schemes, demonstrating the robustness of PEPS simulations.
