Random flux can drive a phase transition from a metal to a higher-order topological insulator in the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. This transition happens in the vicinity of zero energy which is surprising when compared to the influence of random flux on a simple square-lattice model. The authors analytically discover the importance of sublattice degrees of freedom for the transition to happen.
