Fully self-consistent GW is a many-body perturbation theory based on an approximation to the Luttinger-Ward functional. The method satisfies certain conservation laws and thermodynamic consistency, and the self-consistent framework allows us to systematically include strong correlations. Fully self-consistent GW calculations of real materials have so far been hampered by their high computational cost. This paper presents algorithmic improvements and implementation details for the fully self-consistent GW method that make such calculations routinely possible and documents the performance of the method via examples from several materials.

Transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers possess two nonequivalent valleys in the extrema of their band structure. It turns out that off-resonant circularly polarized light affects the electronic excitations in each valley dissimilarly. Such a phenomenon leads to different shifts of the excitonic transitions in nonequivalent valleys of the monolayer. Here, the authors report on a theoretical investigation of such valley-selective transient shifts of both 1sA and 1sB exciton transitions in MoS2 and WSe2 monolayers. The study is based on the semiconductor Bloch equations, where, contrary to the previous studies, the many-body Coulomb interaction effects are properly included. The theoretical estimates of the excitonic shifts are in a good agreement with these novel experimental results.

Spin and valley Hall effects induced by asymmetric interparticle scattering

M. M. Glazov and L. E. Golub

Phys. Rev. B 106, 235305 (2022) - Published 5 December, 2022

The physics of spin currents has always attracted the attention of Professor Rashba who made seminal contributions to the field. Here, the authors develop the theory of the spin and valley Hall effects in systems of interacting fermions and bosons. In high-mobility two-dimensional semiconductors, the interparticle scattering dominates over the impurity and phonon scattering and controls the transport effects. The authors demonstrate theoretically that the collisions between the quasiparticles give rise to the spin and valley Hall currents via the skew-scattering effect. They also calculate the efficiency of such a process.

Spin-orbital effect on the polariton state in traps

Yuri G. Rubo

Phys. Rev. B 106, 235306 (2022) - Published 5 December, 2022

To what extent can photonic or polaritonic systems model electron spin-dependent phenomena? Even in the single-particle description the main limitation comes from the time-reversal symmetry operation, which is different for electrons and polaritons. This paper analyzes the qualitative differences between the trapped polariton states in the presence of transverse-electric–transverse-magnetic splitting as compared to the trapped electron states in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the coupling of orbital and polarization (spin) degrees of freedom is enhanced in polariton rings, leading to the formation of a ground state with a polarization-vortex structure.

Ballistic-electron coherent spin precession in a Rashba two-dimensional electron system

Mark Johnson

Phys. Rev. B 106, 235307 (2022) - Published 5 December, 2022

In a remarkable manifestation of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect, spin polarized carriers injected into a narrow two-dimensional electron system channel have ballistic trajectories and a weakly relativistic Fermi velocity. In the carrier rest frame, the intrinsic electric field in the quantum well transforms as an effective magnetic field, H*, transverse to the trajectories. Electrons with initial spin momentum and polarization orientations along the channel precess because of H* with a wavelength λ. For long mean free paths l, spin detection probes at distances L < l record conductance oscillations with wavelength λ. Two unique experiments that demonstrate these oscillations are discussed.
