Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022006 (2026) - Published 6 April, 2026

A staggered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger ladder is realized in an atomic momentum chain by introducing fully controlled next-nearest-neighbor couplings. By tracking the bulk dynamics of wave packets, the experiment maps the two-dimensional topological phase diagram of the ladder model and identifies three phases characterized by winding numbers.

Radiation damage caused by radicals generated during high-intensity beam irradiation can be repaired through annealing. On the basis of this concept, researchers have developed a polarized proton solid target operating at room temperature using dynamic nuclear polarization with photoexcited triplet electrons.
