Chladni patterns explained by the space-dependent diffusion of bouncing grains

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L032001 (2025) - Published 1 July, 2025

A mechanism for the formation of Chladni patterns is proposed. When a grain bounces on a vibrated membrane, it behaves as a random walker, whose diffusivity increases with the local amplitude of vibration. This provides a simple framework for understanding the collective dynamics of bouncing grains.

Phys. Rev. Research 7, L022079 (2025) - Published 30 June, 2025

Using enhanced simulations, this work shows that the counterintuitive increase in hydrophobic attraction with rising temperature stems from the rapid thermal expansion of solvation shells around extended hydrophobic solutes. A morphometric theory links this behavior to a near-critical drying transition, providing a comprehensive quantitative explanation that challenges traditional assumptions about the role of hydrogen bonding.
