Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy - Differential Phase Contrast (STEM-DPC) is a 4D-STEM technique that allows quantitative characterization of electromagnetic fields down to nanoscale resolution. However, a significant challenge arises from diffractive intensity scattering in crystalline materials, which introduces distortive contrast that can obscure magnetic imaging. This work details how to minimize this issue, which the authors demonstrate using a ferromagnetic freestanding La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin film to quantify diffraction contrast variations under different orientations and processing conditions. All the data and scripts are made publicly available, providing a platform for others to test their own processing.

Perovskite cobaltite films and interfaces are of interest for a wide variety of reasons and applications, including magnetism. One fascinating aspect of such materials is their tendency to form ordered arrangements of oxygen vacancies. Here, the authors demonstrate that the ordering of oxygen vacancies in prototypical La1−xSrxCoO3−δ can be precisely controlled through both heteroepitaxial strain and growth orientation. This in turn controls the oxygen vacancy depth profile, with profound consequences for electronic and magnetic behavior. In particular, dead layer effects can be effectively mitigated via this approach, enabling bulk-like metallic and ferromagnetic properties at few-unit-cell thicknesses.

Chiral multifold fermions in topological semimetals host exotic quantum states, but their intuitive spectroscopic studies are often constrained by challenges in achieving high-quality surfaces. In this study, the authors employ high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in combination with first-principles calculations to uncover multiple chiral Fermi arc surface states in the naturally cleavable topological semimetal PdSbSe. They provide direct spectroscopic evidence of multifold fermions and spin-split bulk bands, firmly establishing PdSbSe as a promising material platform for exploring topological chirality. Furthermore, the identification of high-order Chern numbers and robust surface states provides new insights into chiral electronic structures and paves the way for potential applications in topological quantum devices.
