A dandelion pappus is modelled as a porous disk. A stability analysis finds that if the disk is sufficiently porous the steady wake is stable and consists in a separated recirculating vortex ring, which allows a long-distance dispersal of the dandelion seeds.

We propose a windward bi-frequency control strategy to manipulate experimentally the wake past a yawed car model using pulsed jets. By varying the low frequency value in the actuation, we can provide a complete authority for the manipulation of the mean wake orientation and reduce drag.

The application of the deterministic lateral displacement approach in microfluidics to deformability-based sorting of cells is explored. Mesoscale hydrodynamics simulations are employed to show that this requires large flow-induced cell deformation in the trajectory-distinguishing flow region.

Effect of layout on asymptotic boundary layer regime in deep wind farms

This paper presents wind tunnel data for 56 different layouts of a scaled wind farm with 100 porous disk models. The data indicates that a nonuniform streamwise spacing between turbine rows can increase power output in the fully developed and entrance regions of large wind farms.

Viscous entrainment on hairy surfaces

Inspired by nectar-drinking bats, an experimental and theoretical study investigates viscous entrainment in hairy textures. The trapped liquid is modeled using a Darcy-Brinkmann-like approach and the drainage flow solution is derived. The results reveal an optimal hair density to maximize fluid uptake.

Large scale cyclonic vortices, such as tropical cyclones in the Earth atmosphere, exhibit an eye in their center. A new mechanism to understand the formation of such eyes is investigated. Contrary to standard explanations, it is shown that a purely hydrodynamic instability can yield an eye.

Theorists propose a model for predicting and interpreting blood spatter patterns resulting from gunshot wounds. The atomization process, the trajectories of the backspatter drops of blood from the wound to the ground, the impact angle and the impact Weber number on the ground, as well as the distribution and location of blood stains and their shape and sizes are predicted.
