Jet quenching in strongly coupled plasma

Paul M. Chesler and Krishna Rajagopal

Phys. Rev. D 90, 025033 (2014) - Published 29 July, 2014

By using the gravity dual, the passage of a light quark (“jet”) through a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma of finite length is studied, finding that the “jet” emerging from the plasma looks remarkably similar to a “jet” in vacuum with the same reduced energy. The energy loss of such “jets” is calculated, showing a Bragg peak when the length of the plasma reaches the stopping distance.

Finite pulse effects on e+e− pair creation from strong electric fields

H. Taya, H. Fujii, and K. Itakura

Phys. Rev. D 90, 014039 (2014) - Published 25 July, 2014

Electron positron pair production in a pulsed electric field background is studied, and the authors successfully identify, analytically, the transition regime between Schwinger’s non-perturbative result in a constant field and the leading order perturbative result in the case of a highly time dependent field

Black holes in N=8 supergravity from SO(4,4) hidden symmetries

David D. K. Chow and Geoffrey Compère

Phys. Rev. D 90, 025029 (2014) - Published 23 July, 2014

Exploiting the symmetries of an associated coset model, the solution generating technique for the most general asymptotically flat, stationary black holes of N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions is developed.

Epoch of reionization window. I. Mathematical formalism

Adrian Liu, Aaron R. Parsons, and Cathryn M. Trott

Phys. Rev. D 90, 023018 (2014) - Published 23 July, 2014

The authors develop a rigorous and robust framework for data analysis, aimed at foreground reduction, in particular for eliciting information from the 21 cm line, where the foreground noise can be considerably stronger than the cosmological signal.

Asymmetric lepton-flavor violating Higgs boson decays

Shikma Bressler, Avital Dery, and Aielet Efrati

Phys. Rev. D 90, 015025 (2014) - Published 22 July, 2014

Exploiting the asymmetry between electrons and muons in the final states of two lepton-flavor violating Higgs decays in the leptonic τ decay channel, a new method to search for such decays is found, revealing a 3σ sensitivity for discovering the decays with the current LHC data sample at 8 TeV

Partition functions and Casimir energies in higher spin AdSd+1/CFTd

Simone Giombi, Igor R. Klebanov, and Arkady A. Tseytlin

Phys. Rev. D 90, 024048 (2014) - Published 18 July, 2014

The AdS/CFT correspondence between several N-vectorial conformal field theories in arbitrary d-dimensional spaces with nontrivial topologies and their higher spin bulk duals is studied in detail, providing convincing evidence for the conjectured dualities by matching their corresponding partition functions and Casimir energies at one-loop in large N expansions.

Critical O(N) models in 6−ε dimensions

Lin Fei, Simone Giombi, and Igor R. Klebanov

Phys. Rev. D 90, 025018 (2014) - Published 14 July, 2014

The structure of O(N) symmetric scalar field theories with quartic interaction in higher dimensions (4 < d < 6) is studied in detail. Strong evidence is found that, at least for large enough N, interacting unitary O(N) symmetric conformal field theories exist in this dimensional range, in particular in five dimensions.

Aligned natural inflation in string theory

Cody Long, Liam McAllister, and Paul McGuirk

Phys. Rev. D 90, 023501 (2014) - Published 10 July, 2014

The authors discuss type IIB string theory realizations of Kim-Nilles-Peloso (KNP) multiple axion inflation, which provides a super-Planckian effective axion decay constant, necessary for UV stable realistic slow roll inflation.

Natural chaotic inflation and ultraviolet sensitivity

Nemanja Kaloper and Albion Lawrence

Phys. Rev. D 90, 023506 (2014) - Published 3 July, 2014

Motivated by the BICEP2 observation, which may imply a sensitivity to UV completions for inflation models, the effects of UV corrections for axion monodromy inflation models (also typically obtained from explicit string constructions), and their possible observable signatures are discussed.

Redux on “When is the top quark a parton?”

S. Dawson, A. Ismail, and Ian Low

Phys. Rev. D 90, 014005 (2014) - Published 1 July, 2014

In processes where a heavy particle is produced with a top quark, an effective top quark parton distribution function (PDF) is investigated, revealing situations where the PDF can provide an efficacious description of the process.
