David Curtin, Rouven Essig, Stefania Gori, Prerit Jaiswal, Andrey Katz, Tao Liu, Zhen Liu, David McKeen, Jessie Shelton, Matthew Strassler, Ze’ev Surujon, Brock Tweedie, and Yi-Ming Zhong

Phys. Rev. D 90, 075004 (2014) - Published 13 October, 2014

The authors provide a thorough survey of exotic decay modes of Higgs particles and show that existing and future experimental data on these decays can be a powerful means of identifying new weakly coupled particles and constraining models of new physics.

Large Nc gauge theory with quarks in high representations

Thomas D. Cohen and Srimoyee Sen

Phys. Rev. D 90, 085008 (2014) - Published 9 October, 2014

The authors study QCD-like theories with quarks in high dimensional representations. In less than four space-time dimensions, a new large N (number of colors) limit is found, in which the theories are exactly calculable: they are either conformal or confining in the infrared limit depending on whether the quarks are massless or massive.

Complementarity of dark matter detectors in light of the neutrino background

F. Ruppin, J. Billard, E. Figueroa-Feliciano, and L. Strigari

Phys. Rev. D 90, 083510 (2014) - Published 7 October, 2014

Neutrinos could be mistaken for dark matter by certain types of detectors, so researchers are outlining ways to differentiate the two signals.

From rigid supersymmetry to twisted holomorphic theories

Cyril Closset, Thomas T. Dumitrescu, Guido Festuccia, and Zohar Komargodski

Phys. Rev. D 90, 085006 (2014) - Published 3 October, 2014

The partition function of four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric field theories depends on the manifold on which the theory is defined. The paper reports that a related (twisted) version of the theory can be used to compute the dependence on the background geometry and other properties more simply.

Deconfinement as an entropic self-destruction: A solution for the quarkonium suppression puzzle?

Dmitri E. Kharzeev

Phys. Rev. D 90, 074007 (2014) - Published 2 October, 2014

A novel mechanism for the disassociation of the quarkonia in the quark gluon plasma is proposed, leading to a possible solution of the suppression puzzle of heavy quarkonia in heavy ion collisions.

Mapping gravitational-wave backgrounds using methods from CMB analysis: Application to pulsar timing arrays

Jonathan Gair, Joseph D. Romano, Stephen Taylor, and Chiara M. F. Mingarelli

Phys. Rev. D 90, 082001 (2014) - Published 1 October, 2014

The authors describe how the formalism used to describe CMB polarisation can be used to construct maps of the gravitational-wave background using pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). While the ”gradient” part of the background can be constrained by timing sufficiently many pulsars (top panel), the ”curl” part of the background (bottom panel) is invisible to PTAs.

Detecting the polarization induced by scattering of the microwave background quadrupole in galaxy clusters

Alex Hall and Anthony Challinor

Phys. Rev. D 90, 063518 (2014) - Published 22 September, 2014

This paper is a study of the feasibility of detecting and distinguishing remote quadrupole polarization in CMB photons scattered within galaxy clusters. It complements other cosmological probes of extremely large spatial scales that offer a unique vista of our past light cone, and provides the analytical wherewithal for such surveys of the CMB.

Entanglement entropy of Wilson loops: Holography and matrix models

Simon A. Gentle and Michael Gutperle

Phys. Rev. D 90, 066011 (2014) - Published 18 September, 2014

The gauge/gravity duality (AdS/CFT) passes yet another non-trivial test: the entanglement entropy of a spatial region in the presence of a supersymmetric circular Wilson loop is calculated from both sides of the duality, and the results are found to match.

Inferring black hole charge from backscattered electromagnetic radiation

Luís C. B. Crispino, Sam R. Dolan, Atsushi Higuchi, and Ednilton S. de Oliveira

Phys. Rev. D 90, 064027 (2014) - Published 15 September, 2014

The authors find anomalous (nonvanishing) backscattering of electromagnetic flux from charged (Reissner-Nordström) black holes. For rapidly spinning black holes an enhancement of this a priori negligible effect is expected, giving them a distinctive signature.

First axion results from the XENON100 experiment

E. Aprile et al. (XENON100 Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 90, 062009 (2014) - Published 9 September, 2014

Axions, particles predicted by many favored extensions of the standard model, are stringently constrained by the latest results from XENON100. Axion-electron interactions for solar axions, axion-like-particle dark matter and QCD axions in the most popular scenarios are excluded at significantly improved levels.

Measurement of the Higgs boson mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ*→4ℓ channels in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

G. Aad et al. (ATLAS Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 90, 052004 (2014) - Published 9 September, 2014

Improved analysis of CERN’s data has tightened up the accuracy of the measurement of the Higgs boson’s mass.

Degenerate gaugino mass region and mono-boson collider signatures

Archana Anandakrishnan, Linda M. Carpenter, and Stuart Raby

Phys. Rev. D 90, 055004 (2014) - Published 4 September, 2014

Light electroweak gauginos and higgsinos are among the supersymmetric particles with the best chance to be found at the LHC. The authors study the prospects of finding such particles, arguing that the mono-Z events may provide the most efficient search strategy.

Limitations and opportunities of off-shell coupling measurements

Christoph Englert and Michael Spannowsky

Phys. Rev. D 90, 053003 (2014) - Published 3 September, 2014

The constraints on the standard model Higgs boson width from correlating Higgs signal strengths with off-shell cross section measurements are studied, showing that constraints obtained this way are generally not reliable in the presence of new physics. The authors point out the possibility of overcoming this limitation in the case of weak boson fusion.

Cosmological constraints on very dark photons

Anthony Fradette, Maxim Pospelov, Josef Pradler, and Adam Ritz

Phys. Rev. D 90, 035022 (2014) - Published 25 August, 2014

A ”dark photon” that mixes with the usual electromagnetic photon has cosmological consequences. The paper explores them for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), and finds new constraints for this scenario from cosmology.

Logarithmic corrections to N≥2 black hole entropy

Cynthia Keeler, Finn Larsen, and Pedro Lisbão

Phys. Rev. D 90, 043011 (2014) - Published 21 August, 2014

By means of a new efficient method for computing the one-loop corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric four-dimensional black holes, the logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is found.

Béranger Dumont, John F. Gunion, Yun Jiang, and Sabine Kraml

Phys. Rev. D 90, 035021 (2014) - Published 21 August, 2014

To what extent is the 125.5 GeV Higgs-like resonance observed at the LHC, compatible with Two-Higgs-Doublet-Models (2HDMs) - one of the simplest extensions of the Higgs sector? The paper provides an exhaustive analysis.

The authors compute high-order post-Newtonian corrections to the two-body problem and successfully compare to numerical and analytic gravitational self-force calculations that are useful in certain extreme mass ratio limits.

Quantum dimension as entanglement entropy in two dimensional conformal field theories

Song He, Tokiro Numasawa, Tadashi Takayanagi, and Kento Watanabe

Phys. Rev. D 90, 041701(R) (2014) - Published 13 August, 2014

The authors show that the entanglement entropy of 2d conformal field theories, in the presence of operator insertions, receives a universal additive contribution relative to the vacuum quantity. The contribution is computed explicitly and expressed in terms of the dimension of the inserted operator.

Raphael Bousso, Horacio Casini, Zachary Fisher, and Juan Maldacena

Phys. Rev. D 90, 044002 (2014) - Published 1 August, 2014

The generalized Covariant Entropy Bound (Bousso Bound), a generalization of the black hole entropy bound, is proven under weaker assumptions than previously for free quantum field theories in the limit of small gravitational backreaction.

Chaotic inflation in supergravity after Planck and BICEP2

Renata Kallosh, Andrei Linde, and Alexander Westphal

Phys. Rev. D 90, 023534 (2014) - Published 30 July, 2014

The consequences of some of the simplest versions of chaotic inflation in supergravity, where the inflation field is one of the scalar fields in chiral matter multiplets, are studied, showing that with a two-parameter sextic potential all current Planck/BICEP2 data can be matched. Furthermore, adding a small non-minimal coupling to gravity can provide a CMB power suppression at large angular scales.
