Yun-Hua Chen and Feng-Kun Guo

Phys. Rev. D 100, 054035 (2019) - Published 26 September, 2019

Di-pion transitions in excited bottomonium are affected by intermediate resonances. Here the authors include effects from the newly discovered Zb states and suggest that they play an important role beyond the traditional multipole expansion.

Light-cone modular bootstrap and pure gravity

Nathan Benjamin, Hirosi Ooguri, Shu-Heng Shao, and Yifan Wang

Phys. Rev. D 100, 066029 (2019) - Published 23 September, 2019

Using a special technique, modular bootstrap in the lightcone limit, the authors study the large spin spectrum in a certain class of two-dimensional conformal field theories. They identify the universal contribution to the density of large spin states from the vacuum, which they show becomes negative in a specific limit, which, as a consequence, would imply that pure AdS3 gravity does not exist.

Revisiting the second post-Minkowskian eikonal and the dynamics of binary black holes

Arnau Koemans Collado, Paolo Di Vecchia, and Rodolfo Russo

Phys. Rev. D 100, 066028 (2019) - Published 23 September, 2019

The authors study the two-body gravitational scattering of massive scalars in general spacetime dimensions in the limit when both the energies and the impact parameter are large, which is relevant for the scattering of two black holes. The two- body scattering angle between the two black holes up to the second post- Minkowskian order (2PM) is extracted, which in various limits agrees with known results.

Gravitational effects on geonium and free electron gs-factor measurements in a Penning trap

S. Ulbricht, R. A. Müller, and A. Surzhykov

Phys. Rev. D 100, 064029 (2019) - Published 17 September, 2019

The authors investigate relativistic corrections to the energy levels of an electron confined in a Penning trap. The Earth’s gravitational field induces small changes to transition frequencies that may become relevant for future measurements of the electron’s magnetic moment.

Branes and the swampland

Hee-Cheol Kim, Gary Shiu, and Cumrun Vafa

Phys. Rev. D 100, 066006 (2019) - Published 5 September, 2019

Swampland conditions are usually conjectures that divide apparently consistent (anomaly free) quantum field theories into those which can emerge from a quantum gravitational theory (the landscape), and those which cannot and therefore lie in the so-called swampland. Here the authors derive swampland conditions for certain supergravity theories from the consistency of sources (branes) for the fields in these theories, and assign a number of a priori consistent theories to the swampland, thus starting a program for a deeper understanding of swampland conditions.

Nonperturbative test of consistency relations and their violation

Angelo Esposito, Lam Hui, and Roman Scoccimarro

Phys. Rev. D 100, 043536 (2019) - Published 28 August, 2019

The authors nonperturbatively test large scale consistency relations, implied by symmetries of the large scale structure dynamics, with N-body simulations and show how they are violated for non-Gaussian initial conditions. This is a pioneering first step in constraining primordial non-Gaussianities with highly non-linear modes of the observed large scale structure, including astrophysical fluctuations like galaxies, which are measured with high precision and go beyond the limited perturbative (linear) regime.

M. Di Carlo, G. Martinelli, D. Giusti, V. Lubicz, C. T. Sachrajda, F. Sanfilippo, S. Simula, and N. Tantalo

Phys. Rev. D 100, 034514 (2019) - Published 21 August, 2019

The leading electromagnetic and strong isospin-breaking corrections to the decay rates of light pseudoscalar mesons are computed for the first time in a lattice QCD simulation. Combining with experimentally measured decay rates, the authors obtain the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vus|=0.22538(46), the most precise value, so far.

Michele Caselle, Nicodemo Magnoli, Alessandro Nada, Marco Panero, and Marcello Scanavino

Phys. Rev. D 100, 034512 (2019) - Published 14 August, 2019

The authors test the predictive power of conformal perturbation in the neighborhood of the finite temperature critical point of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, assuming that it is in the 3D Ising model universality class. Comparison with lattice data confirm that the predictions are accurate in a broad range of temperatures around Tc.

Modeling biased tracers at the field level

Marcel Schmittfull, Marko Simonović, Valentin Assassi, and Matias Zaldarriaga

Phys. Rev. D 100, 043514 (2019) - Published 8 August, 2019

The authors test the perturbative halo bias model, of central relevance for the cosmological large scale structure, at the field level which allows a direct comparison with simulations. It turns out that model errors can be significantly reduced by this method which is of particular relevance for observables that require a precise estimate of the large-scale potential.

R. Aaij et al. (LHCb Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 100, 032001 (2019) - Published 1 August, 2019

The LHCb collaboration reports measurements of three charmed baryon lifetimes using 7 and 8 TeV data. These results significantly improve on the precision of existing world averages. The new Ξc0 lifetime is found to be somewhat higher than previous estimates.

Michael A. Fedderke, Peter W. Graham, and Surjeet Rajendran

Phys. Rev. D 100, 015040 (2019) - Published 26 July, 2019

Very light axion (fuzzy) dark matter would have an impact on CMB polarization. The authors examine two effects, from early and late axion oscillations, and use them to put constraints on the allowed mass and couplings of such particles. They also discuss prospects for future discovery.

Frequency domain model of f-mode dynamic tides in gravitational waveforms from compact binary inspirals

Patricia Schmidt and Tanja Hinderer

Phys. Rev. D 100, 021501(R) (2019) - Published 18 July, 2019

Gravitational waves from neutron star (NS) binary inspirals are rich in information about the properties of matter under extremes of density attainable only in NS interiors. This paper reports a new efficient analytic model of the gravitational-wave signatures of dynamical tides associated with the neutron stars’ fundamental oscillation modes for NS spectroscopy with gravitational waves. The model will be valuable for measuring tidal parameters from gravitational wave signals and thus enable probing fundamental subatomic physics in unexplored regimes, potentially discovering exotic states of matter, and performing novel tests of strong-field gravity.

Barak Zackay, Tejaswi Venumadhav, Liang Dai, Javier Roulet, and Matias Zaldarriaga

Phys. Rev. D 100, 023007 (2019) - Published 17 July, 2019

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration has generously made the data from its First Observing Run (O1) publicly available, including that from the two history-making observations of gravitational waves from binary black hole merger events GW150914 and GW151226. In this paper, the authors apply an independent search pipeline to the aLIGO O1 data to search for additional gravitational wave events and argue for the existence of a previously undiscovered BH merger event, GW151216.

Lance J. Dixon, Ian Moult, and Hua Xing Zhu

Phys. Rev. D 100, 014009 (2019) - Published 9 July, 2019

The authors develop a factorization formula for the collinear limit of the Energy-Energy Correlator observable in generic field theories. This allows for resummation of logarithms, including an improvement of existing QCD results by two orders and applications to Super Yang-Mills theories.

Dynamical systems and nonlinear transient rheology of the far-from-equilibrium Bjorken flow

Alireza Behtash, Syo Kamata, Mauricio Martinez, and Haosheng Shi

Phys. Rev. D 99, 116012 (2019) - Published 14 June, 2019

The authors investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a far-from-equilibrium weakly coupled plasma undergoing a certain hydrodynamic expansion – Bjorken expansion. By using an asymptotic perturbative power series of the one-particle distribution function, they develop a new non-perturbative dynamical renormalization scheme that goes beyond the linear response theory. As a result, this provides a new description for the transport coefficients in regimes far from equilibrium.

Making dark matter out of light: Freeze-in from plasma effects

Cora Dvorkin, Tongyan Lin, and Katelin Schutz

Phys. Rev. D 99, 115009 (2019) - Published 11 June, 2019

Dark matter (DM) could couple to Standard Model (SM) particles through a light mediator and this could be responsible for the observed DM abundances through freeze−in. Here, the authors identify an additional production channel through the decay of photons that have acquired an in-medium plasma mass. They contribute to the relic abundance, lowering by an order of magnitude the target cross-section for the lowest dark matter masses.

A. M. Sirunyan et al. (CMS Collaboration)

Phys. Rev. D 99, 112003 (2019) - Published 11 June, 2019

The CMS Collaboration presents the to-date most precise measurement of the Higgs boson width and coupling to two vector bosons. The latter is found to be consistent with standard model expectations.

Asymptotic structure of electromagnetism in higher spacetime dimensions

Marc Henneaux and Cédric Troessaert

Phys. Rev. D 99, 125006 (2019) - Published 10 June, 2019

The authors provide a detailed and rigorous study of the asymptotic structure and boundary conditions for electromagnetism in higher spacetime dimensions (D>4), and construct the associated asymptotic symmetries and its algebra. What sets out to be a trivial generalization of the four-dimensional case reveals a surprising additional u(1)-symmetry as soon as the spacetime dimension is larger than four.

Noah Kurinsky, To Chin Yu, Yonit Hochberg, and Blas Cabrera

Phys. Rev. D 99, 123005 (2019) - Published 10 June, 2019

This paper explores in detail the potential for sub-GeV dark matter detection using lab-grown diamond. The authors find comparable performance to other semiconductor technologies, such as Ge and Si, for nuclear and electronic recoils, with the ability to explore parameter space not covered by existing experiments. Possible advantages for diamond are discussed.
