Next-to-leading order Balitsky-Kovchegov equation beyond large Nc

T. Lappi, H. Mäntysaari, and A. Ramnath

Phys. Rev. D 102, 074027 (2020) - Published 29 October, 2020

The authors compute next to leading order corrections for the correlator of two Wilson lines at high energy (the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation) for a finite number of colors, Nc. They show that the corrections, expected to be 1/Nc2, are truly small, ~ 5%.

Excess electronic recoil events in XENON1T

Phys. Rev. D 102, 072004 (2020) - Published 12 October, 2020

Are the excess events detected by the XENON1T detector a harbinger of new physics or a mundane background?

Revisiting primordial black hole capture into neutron stars

Y. Génolini, P. D. Serpico, and P. Tinyakov

Phys. Rev. D 102, 083004 (2020) - Published 5 October, 2020

The authors study a novel stellar catastrophic process where neutron stars swallow primordial black holes, which in turn start swallowing their material, thereby turning them into black holes. In particular, they revisit well-known results on dynamical friction by focussing on several neutron star models and show that while it is very important during the capture process, accretion is the dominant process post-capture.

Searching for anisotropic cosmic birefringence with polarization data from SPTpol

F. Bianchini et al.

Phys. Rev. D 102, 083504 (2020) - Published 2 October, 2020

The authors report on a search for cosmic birefringence in a region of the southern sky, with the South Pole Telescope. They reconstruct a map of cosmic polarization rotation anisotropies and measure the angular power spectrum of the map, finding it to be consistent with zero. This non detection is used to place constraints on the strength of primordial magnetic fields and of the coupling constant of the electromagnetic Chern-Simons term.

Phys. Rev. D 102, 052009 (2020) - Published 30 September, 2020

An analysis of more than 300,000 muon neutrino detections provides no evidence of sterile neutrinos—a finding at odds with other experiments.

Gravity dual of Connes cocycle flow

Raphael Bousso, Venkatesa Chandrasekaran, Pratik Rath, and Arvin Shahbazi-Moghaddam

Phys. Rev. D 102, 066008 (2020) - Published 24 September, 2020

The AdS/CFT correspondence allows one in principle to reconstruct the physics of a full (nonperturbative) quantum gravity from a conformal field theory on the boundary of AdS space, which is however difficult to do in practice even if the CFT is exactly defined. The authors define a “kink-transform” to reconstruct operators in the “bulk” and show that it is the dual of the so-called Connes cocycle flow on the boundary, which is more regular than previously considered similar constructions.

Gravitomagnetic Love tensor of a slowly rotating body: Post-Newtonian theory

Eric Poisson

Phys. Rev. D 102, 064059 (2020) - Published 24 September, 2020

How tidally deformable bodies, such as neutron stars, couple to gravitomagnetic tidal forces is the subject of this paper. The coupling was thought to be through a scalar quantity called the Love number, but the present work shows that the assumptions in the literature that led to this identification are erroneous and the correct way to characterize the interaction is through a tensor quantity that the author calls a Love tensor. This surprising and fundamental result is derived in post-Newtonian theory but is, in all likelihood, generalizable to full general relativity.

Phys. Rev. D 102, 054509 (2020) - Published 17 September, 2020

A rigorous calculation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in kaon decays has twice the precision of a previous calculation, removing tension that had existed between theory and experiment.

New results from the Pierre Auger Observatory could narrow down the search for the origin of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays.

Searching for cosmological gravitational-wave backgrounds with third-generation detectors in the presence of an astrophysical foreground

Ashish Sharma and Jan Harms

Phys. Rev. D 102, 063009 (2020) - Published 9 September, 2020

Third-generation gravitational-wave detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope and the Cosmic Explorer, are projected to be not only extremely sensitive instruments for detecting compact binary coalescences but also the cosmological gravitational-wave background. However, in order to delineate the stochastic cosmological gravitational-wave background in the observed data, the astrophysical foreground needs to be subtracted. This paper proposes a method to achieve this to make these new GW detectors instruments of cosmology.

GW190412: Observation of a binary-black-hole coalescence with asymmetric masses

Phys. Rev. D 102, 043015 (2020) - Published 24 August, 2020

Energy trapped Ising model

Andrea Amoretti, Gianluca Costagliola, Nicodemo Magnoli, and Marcello Scanavino

Phys. Rev. D 102, 036018 (2020) - Published 21 August, 2020

The authors explore a method for computing correlation functions that is complementary to the well-known bootstrap program and particularly well suited for determining the behavior of off-critical systems, i.e. systems perturbed around their conformal point. They do so for a class of perturbations of the 3D Ising model which are relevant for real experiments on systems in a so-called thermal trap.

Early dark energy does not restore cosmological concordance

J. Colin Hill, Evan McDonough, Michael W. Toomey, and Stephon Alexander

Phys. Rev. D 102, 043507 (2020) - Published 5 August, 2020

The authors provide a thorough study of a popular scenario (early dark energy EDE) to alleviate the tension in the measurements of the Hubble constant H0, which either rely on early Universe probes and the cosmological standard model (ΛCDM) or on late Universe probes through direct, local distant measurements. The authors show that the inclusion of numerous large-scale structure data is in conflict with the parameter space that lifts the H0 tension and severely limits the existence of EDE and, thus, makes it very unlikely to resolve the tension.

Transport and hydrodynamics in the chiral limit

Eduardo Grossi, Alexander Soloviev, Derek Teaney, and Fanglida Yan

Phys. Rev. D 102, 014042 (2020) - Published 27 July, 2020

For a thermal system with light pions, over large distances both hydrodynamic and chiral modes must be included. The authors accomplish this, and compute the leading corrections in the pion mass squared to transport coefficients. This illuminates the properties of the QCD medium at temperatures close to but below Tc.

Instantons and Hilbert functions

Evgeny I. Buchbinder, Andre Lukas, Burt A. Ovrut, and Fabian Ruehle

Phys. Rev. D 102, 026019 (2020) - Published 24 July, 2020

The determination of the superpotential of the effective four-dimensional theory obtained from compactifications in string theory is in general a notoriously difficult problem, especially if string theoretical instantons play a role. The authors formulate conditions for a nonvanishing instanton superpotential in certain (heterotic) Calabi-Yau compactifications and find that they are rarely satisfied.

Phys. Rev. D 102, 014513 (2020) - Published 23 July, 2020

The authors compute, for the first time, the form factors of the semileptonic Bc→Bs(d) decays in the continuum limit of lattice QCD with all errors under control. They use their results to predict differential decay rates and branching fractions to be compared with future experimental results or to extract the CKM matrix elements |Vcs| and |Vcd| from them.
