Microscopic description of octupole shape-phase transitions in light actinide and rare-earth nuclei

K. Nomura, D. Vretenar, T. Nikšić, and Bing-Nan Lu

Phys. Rev. C 89, 024312 (2014) - Published 24 February, 2014

The authors present a systematic analysis of low-lying quadrupole and octupole collective states based on the microscopic energy density functional framework. Consistent with the empirical trend, the resulting nuclear structure characteristics show evidence of a shape transition between stable octupole deformation and octupole softness.

Charged-pion electroproduction above the resonance region

Tom Vrancx and Jan Ryckebusch

Phys. Rev. C 89, 025203 (2014) - Published 24 February, 2014

In order to describe pion electroproduction data above the nucleon resonance region, the authors introduce a gauged pion-exchange current and propose a new electromagnetic transition form factor. Unlike that of prior descriptions, this form factor has a simple physical interpretation and respects the correct on-shell limit.

Explosive nucleosynthesis of N15 in a massive-star model

Michael J. Bojazi and Bradley S. Meyer

Phys. Rev. C 89, 025807 (2014) - Published 21 February, 2014

The authors explore explosive nucleosynthesis of 15N with a simple but realistic model of shock propagation through the outer layers of an exploding massive star. They conclude that neutron-capture reactions on 18F in helium-rich stellar layers play an important role. The authors perform all calculations with open-source, freely available codes.

Disappearance of Mott oscillations in sub-barrier elastic scattering of identical heavy ions, and the nuclear interaction

L. F. Canto, M. S. Hussein, and W. Mittig

Phys. Rev. C 89, 024610 (2014) - Published 18 February, 2014

The authors treat sub-Coulomb-barrier elastic scattering of heavy ions around 90 degrees where a critical energy exists for which the cross section becomes independent of angle. They point out that the influence of the long-range part of the strong interaction produces a second critical energy which has been seen experimentally in α-α scattering.

Neutral-current interactions of low-energy neutrinos in dense neutron matter

Alessandro Lovato, Omar Benhar, Stefano Gandolfi, and Cristina Losa

Phys. Rev. C 89, 025804 (2014) - Published 18 February, 2014

To effectively cool a neutron star, a massive number of neutrinos must escape the dense neutron matter that results from the progenitor star’s collapse. The authors show that, to achieve a realistic description, both long-range and short-range correlations need to be consistently accounted for.

Nucleon and nucleon-pair momentum distributions in A≤12 nuclei

R. B. Wiringa, R. Schiavilla, Steven C. Pieper, and J. Carlson

Phys. Rev. C 89, 024305 (2014) - Published 10 February, 2014

Momentum distributions of nucleons and pairs of nucleons not only reflect the short-range structure of light nuclei arising from tensor and spin-isospin correlations, they also provide useful insights into electroweak interactions with such nuclei.

Effective field theory for finite systems with spontaneously broken symmetry

Phys. Rev. C 89, 014334 (2014) - Published 31 January, 2014

An extension of effective field theories for finite systems with``emergent symmetry breaking'' shows how symmetry arguments aloneyield the universal features of the low-lying excitations. Applied tothe structure of nonspherical atomic nuclei, some well-known resultsemerge from a new perspective, such as the nuclear vibrations that arethe heads of rotational bands.

Phys. Rev. C 88, 064604 (2013) - Published 5 December, 2013

Macroscopic and microscopic approaches to nuclear fusion near the Coulomb barrier are combined to investigate the couplings between relative motion and internal degrees of freedom of the collision partners. The coupling to vibrational modes lowers the barrier, in good agreement with predictions of fusion thresholds. The method has a broad range of potential applications in nuclear reaction theory.
