Riding a different wave: This study shows that an acoustic metasurface can be a platform to implement airborne surface acoustic waves (SAWs) for analog computing based on a quantum algorithm. The authors’ gradient-index acoustic system can be used to perform the Grover search algorithm, with quadratic speedup over classical searches. Such a SAW-based computing system would offer—in the foreseeable future—a flexible platform for analog simulation of quantum algorithms, which could find application in on-chip integrated acoustic and phononic devices.

Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) is frequently used to image magnetic induction maps of topological magnetic spin structures. These induction maps are visually intuitive, but can be misinterpreted for materials in which the magnetization differs greatly from the integrated induction, leading to ambiguous determination of spin structures. The authors present PyLorentz, their open-source software for simulating LTEM images from three-dimensional micromagnetic simulations. By applying the technique to Néel skyrmions, they demonstrate that combining simulated and experimental LTEM images gives a more complete picture of complex spin structures.
