Neutron-resonance transmission analysis (NRTA) is a powerful technique for materials identification with applications in many fields, but to date it has relied on major kilometer-long user facilities. Here the authors develop a methodology that significantly simplifies the necessary platform, allowing for tabletop laboratory implementations. Experiments demonstrate that the approach here can identify such elements as silver, indium, tungsten, and uranium. This success could turn NRTA, currently a “niche” technique, into an ubiquitous tool with applicability in e.g. nuclear engineering, archaeology, and arms control.

Valley Two-Qubit System in a MoS2-Monolayer Gated Double Quantum dot

This study addresses two hot topics in condensed matter physics: quantum computing and valleytronics. The authors propose a solid-state qubit exploiting the electronic valley degree in a monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC). Simulations show how to obtain single- and two-qubit gates in the valley two-qubit system by electrically controlling the state and the coupling between the two electrons confined in a gated double-quantum-dot structure. Both single- and two-qubit operations are explained, as well as initialization and readout. Thus the team obtains a physical scheme for universal quantum computing based on the valley isospin in gate-defined TMDC double quantum dots.

In the quest to employ miniaturized atomic vapor cells for quantum applications, unfortunately such a short optical path is insufficient to obtain a decent signal that can be used to lock a laser. Heating up the cell would work, but at the price of undesired currents and linewidth broadening. Instead, the authors use light-induced atomic desorption (LIAD) to increase the atomic (and optical) density. Using LIAD yields a much larger contrast than does conventional spectroscopy—even at room temperature. Furthermore, eliminating the need for heating allow remote operation, without the need to provide electrical contacts to the device, which can be an important advantage in applications.
