Radiation damage caused by radicals generated during high-intensity beam irradiation can be repaired through annealing. On the basis of this concept, researchers have developed a polarized proton solid target operating at room temperature using dynamic nuclear polarization with photoexcited triplet electrons.

Passive cooling of a 700 Hz massive (1.5 ng) mechanical cantilever down to 6.1(4) mK by means of nuclear demagnetization is presented, as confirmed by detecting its thermal motion via a lock-in-based detection scheme. At this temperature, the thermal motion of the resonator is still clearly distinguishable from the background noise and the origin of its thermal saturation are discussed.

Direct observation of three-neutron emission from He*7 and the search for the trineutron

S. W. Huang et al.

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022003 (2026) - Published 1 April, 2026

Three-neutron emission from the neutron-rich unbound nucleus 7He is studied through direct detection of the emitted neutrons. The measured three-neutron invariant-mass spectrum and correlations constrain the decay mechanism and the possible contribution of a trineutron component.

Long nuclear spin coherence times for molecules trapped in high-purity solid parahydrogen

Alexandar P. Rollings and Jonathan D. Weinstein

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022002 (2026) - Published 1 April, 2026

The nuclear spin coherence of HD molecules trapped in solid hydrogen is measured. The proton coherence time increases as the magnetic impurities in the solid are reduced, until a limit from the solid itself is reached. Because of the unusual nature of solid hydrogen, long coherence times can be obtained in the solid phase without magic-angle spinning.

First electron acceleration in a tunable-velocity laser wakefield

Aaron Liberman, Anton Golovanov, Slava Smartsev, Anda-Maria Talposi, Sheroy Tata, and Victor Malka

Phys. Rev. Research 8, L022001 (2026) - Published 1 April, 2026

Flying-focus wakefields promise to overcome the dephasing limit in laser-wakefield acceleration, enabling the acceleration of higher energy electrons. This works experimentally demonstrates that such wakefields can maintain the coherent structures necessary for accelerating ultrarelativistic electrons. It also shows that tuning the propagation velocity of the wakefield impacts the maximum electron energy, suggesting the partial mitigation of dephasing.
