Abstract
We demonstrate that standard delay systems with a linear instantaneous and a delayed nonlinear term show weak chaos, asymptotically subdiffusive behavior, and weak ergodicity breaking if the nonlinearity is chosen from a specific class of functions. In the limit of large constant delay times, anomalous behavior may not be observable due to exponentially large crossover times. A periodic modulation of the delay causes a strong reduction of the effective dimension of the chaotic phases, leads to hitherto unknown types of solutions, and the occurrence of anomalous diffusion already at short times. The observed anomalous behavior is caused by nonhyperbolic fixed points in function space.

- Linearizing our system, Eqs. ((1) and ((2)), around the NHFPSs leads to , where is an infinitesimal perturbation of , i.e., . The linear equation can be solved via the method of steps [63], where the solution segments (definition see main text) are connected via . Computing the supremum norm of both sides and applying the triangle inequality gives . Therefore, the perturbation never grows from segment to segment, which implies that the real part of all stability exponents is equal to or lower than 0. The exponent that is equal to 0 belongs to the eigenfunction .

- A solution in one state interval is identified as a plateau if the half of all derivatives of the solution are smaller than a certain threshold value , i.e., if the median of all derivatives in one state interval is smaller than . A plateau phase is identified as a doubly laminar phase if the value of the plateau fulfills the condition .

- The Lyapunov exponents of DDE (1) were computed using the method in Ref. [57], where an integration step width of was used and the separation functions governed by the linearized system were reorthonormalized after each delay period. For the computation of of the chaotic phases, the Lyapunov exponents were defined by the time average of the expansion rates inside the chaotic laminar and turbulent phases, excluding the doubly laminar phases.
- The irregular behavior of for intermediate values of can be explained by the dynamics of the bursts in the doubly laminar phases (see Fig. 2), where stable (nearly) periodic and chaotic burst dynamics are observed. Chaotic burst dynamics is associated with positive expansion rates and thus increases the overall Lyapunov exponent in contrast to stable periodic burst dynamics.

- Equation (1) with an odd nonlinearity and the constant delay can be approximated around an NHFPS with by the DDE with third-order nonlinearity. We now perform the center manifold reduction according to Ref. [77], Chapter 10.2. The linearized equation, , leads to the characteristic equation , which for the relevant case has a single root with vanishing real part given by , where the associated eigenfunction is the constant . Hence, the center subspace is one dimensional. With respect to Hale's bilinear form , the dual eigenfunction is the constant [88]. On the center manifold the solution can be written as with and derivative . Here we use the Hale-Krasovskii notation with . Using the constant dual eigenfunction , the derivative of is given by . Replacing according to our DDE with third-order nonlinearity gives , where we used that the center manifold is of third order due to the reflectional symmetry of the DDE as done in Refs. [82, 89], and therefore . The resulting ordinary differential equation is the normal form of a pitchfork bifurcation and describes the behavior close to the NHFPS.
