The ability to generate transversely propagating elastic waves on free-standing semiconductor films in the 10+ GHz frequency range is a critical element in the effort to achieve phonon-based coupling to on-chip electronic devices. The results of this joint experimental and theoretical study show that such phonons are created by the excitation of free-standing optically subwavelength thickness GaAs films with highly focused femtosecond optical pulses. With sufficiently high strain levels, this approach could become enabling for applications in nano-optomechanics.

Computing the conductivity of interacting systems at nonzero temperature is a fundamental challenge. In integrable systems, the framework of generalized hydrodynamics lets one access the dc limit. Here, the authors combine generalized hydrodynamics with sum rules and locality to compute the ac conductivity of the XXZ spin chain (or, equivalently, interacting spinless fermions). Generically, it diverges at low frequencies, but for special “commensurate” parameters it has a finite limit. These results explain longstanding puzzles regarding the discontinuous parameter dependence of the dc response.
