Confinement of electronic wave functions is a well-studied phenomenon in nanoscale structures, such as quantum dots and thin films. These structures are typically grown to specific dimensions under controlled conditions. Here, in contrast, the authors observe quantum-well states, the spectral signature of confinement, in fractured single crystals. This result shows that thin film like structures can be obtained by fracturing hard crystals. Furthermore, the observed wave-function confinement provides insights about the three-dimensional electronic structure of the heavy-fermion material CeCoIn5.
