Soft phonon and the central peak at the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition in SrTiO3

Avishek Maity, Klaus Habicht, Michael Merz, Ayman H. Said, Christo Guguschev, Danny Kojda, Britta Ryll, Jan-Ekkehard Hoffmann, Andrea Dittmar, Thomas Keller, and Frank Weber

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134108 (2025) - Published 14 April, 2025

The authors reexamine here the lattice dynamical footprint of the canonical antiferrodistortive phase transition in SrTiO3 by inelastic x-ray scattering with high energy and momentum resolution for differently grown single crystals. In combination with thermodynamic, transport, and defect-sensitive probes, the study reveals a surprising four-fold enhancement of the eponymous central peak in the sample with lower defect concentration. Anisotropic correlation lengths observed on cooling towards Tc indicate that local properties of the crystals are at the origin of the central peak in SrTiO3.

Tunable Dirac nodal line in orthorhombic RuO2

Ece Uykur, Oleg Janson, Victoria A. Ginga, Marcus Schmidt, Nico Giordano, and Alexander A. Tsirlin

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134114 (2025) - Published 24 April, 2025

Hydrostatic pressure lowers the symmetry of RuO2 and controls the amount of orthorhombic strain in this material. The structural transformation upon compression is traced via single-crystal x-ray diffraction combined with ab initio calculations. It is shown that pressurized RuO2 does not become altermagnetic, but it retains the key feature of the parent tetragonal phase, the Dirac nodal line that can be shifted across the Fermi level by varying pressure.

Polarization-resolved core exciton dynamics in LiF using attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

Kylie J. Gannan, Lauren B. Drescher, Rafael Quintero-Bermudez, Navdeep Rana, Chengye Huang, Kenneth Schafer, Mette B. Gaarde, and Stephen R. Leone

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134306 (2025) - Published 28 April, 2025

The authors introduce here linear dichroism into attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements to explore the orbital character of core exciton excited states in LiF thin films during their few-femtosecond exciton coherence lifetimes. The dichroic effect is well-described by atomic alignment angular momentum rules, which allow or forbid transitions from an aligned p-like state to a resonant s-like state, depending on the beam polarizations. A few-level model simulation and density functional theory calculations are used to corroborate the orbital character assignments of the core exciton states in the solid.

Magnetoferroelectric phase transition induced by latent spin-lattice coupling in the geometrically frustrated magnet CuFe0.95Al0.05O2

H. Tamatsukuri, T. Uchihara, S. Mitsuda, Y. Ishii, H. Nakao, K. Takehana, and Y. Imanaka

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134403 (2025) - Published 1 April, 2025

In multiferroic CuFe0.95Al0.05O2, applying uniaxial pressure generates a novel magnetoferroelectric phase. This study reveals that the magnetic structure of this phase is of the collinear sinusoidal type, which itself does not break the inversion symmetry in this system. Nevertheless, the sinusoidal magnetic structure likely contributes to the emergence of ferroelectric polarization in this phase through spin-lattice coupling, requiring a mechanism for a spin-associated ferroelectricity.

Transformer wave function for two dimensional frustrated magnets: Emergence of a spin-liquid phase in the Shastry-Sutherland model

Luciano Loris Viteritti, Riccardo Rende, Alberto Parola, Sebastian Goldt, and Federico Becca

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134411 (2025) - Published 8 April, 2025

The authors propose here a variational ansatz based on the Transformer architecture to investigate frustrated quantum magnets. The key idea is based on constructing a map, parametrized with a Transformer, from the space of the physical spin configurations to an abstract space, where the determination of the properties of the system is simplified. This method achieves an exceptionally accurate description of the ground-state properties of the Shastry-Sutherland model, successfully identifying the presence of a gapless quantum spin liquid phase.

Phase diagram of the XXZ pyrochlore model from pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group

Yannik Schaden, Matías G. Gonzalez, and Johannes Reuther

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134442 (2025) - Published 24 April, 2025

Pyrochlore materials exhibit exotic spin physics, which can be well described by a spin-½ nearest neighbor XXZ model. Here, the pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization group is used to compute the entire phase diagram as a function of the temperature and transverse coupling. The authors identify an extensive nonmagnetic regime accompanied by quantum order-by-disorder effects and the possibility of a lattice nematic ground state. In the spin ice phases, the method predicts structure factors with characteristic pinch points, broadened by thermal fluctuations.

Calculations of spin fluctuation spectral functions α2F in high-temperature superconducting cuprates

Griffin Heier and Sergey Y. Savrasov

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134503 (2025) - Published 2 April, 2025

Accurate computations of pairing interaction and Tc for unconventional superconductors is a challenge for current methods. Here, the authors present the calculation of the α2F(ω) spectral functions from the Kramers-Kronig transformation of the spin-fluctuational FLEX pairing vertex. Justifying the use of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieefer (BCS) approximation, calculations are then used to benchmark theory against experimental data, with discussions of the pitfalls and improvements required to improve current computational methods.

Detecting the topological winding of superconducting nodes via local density of states

Lena Engström, Pascal Simon, and Andrej Mesaros

Phys. Rev. B 111, 134505 (2025) - Published 8 April, 2025

The authors propose here a method to use impurity scattering to detect interference effects between two superconducting nodes, each of which carries locally a winding number as a topological invariant. Steps are outlined for choosing an impurity and a tip for the scanning tunnelling microscope, such that the winding difference of the nodes becomes measurable via the local density of states around the impurity. The formalism is demonstrated on a model of a two-dimensional superconductor, but applies to any nodal system with chiral symmetry.

Pyrochlore materials exhibit exotic spin physics, which can be well described by a spin-½ nearest neighbor XXZ model. The authors identify an extensive nonmagnetic regime accompanied by quantum order-by-disorder effects and the possibility of a lattice nematic ground state. In the spin ice phases, the method predicts structure factors with characteristic pinch points, broadened by thermal fluctuations.

Phys.
